No complaints on mush from here in the contest and at times I had a
swarm of S nothing Europeans calling. The issue is everyone calls dead on zero beat and that makes it really difficult. What I did notice which I thought was odd is that when 3 people were calling at the same time it seemed that the signals were stronger or more readable than when I called the DL3 and he came back alone. I want to say there was more "magic" there to push through the receiver when a few were calling over just one. Maybe it was just conditions. I worked tons of guys in the noise. The improved NB is great most of the time. You don't want it on when there are really strong signals close by of course. -- Mike W0MU W0MU-1 CC Cluster w0mu.net:23 or w0mu-1.dnsdynamic.com Http://www.w0mu.com ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
When working contests using NB, you should have the IF setting of NB set to
OFF. Only use the DSP NB settings. Unless of course you are bothered by some impulse that only one of the IF settings cures. Alas, then you will have to endure the extra junk that IF NB *must* create from strong close in signals. The K3's IF NB is a traditional analog technique that was in radios when I was a teenager in the 50's. Elecraft kept it because it's still the best for some noise. IF NB is improved in the K3, tunable for width and depth. The old National was on or off, and we were happy to have it. But either still is a sharp modulation of the IF waveform with a short square-wave waveform, and as such must create mixing products, which you hear. For contests, leave the IF NB off unless you specifically need it. 73, Guy.
