40 meter reciever not tuning

Roland Whitsitt
I was told to report back.  Ok,  I told you-all before that 40 meters wasn't tuning except on the display.  Well I thought all the other bands were tuning.  Looks like 30 meters isn't tuning around either.
I was told by Don to check left on R30.  I checked and while tuning noticed that the voltage DID NOT vary.
I don't have a capacitor checker so I don't know about C71 other than replacing it.  It has a little monolithic cap marked "820" on it.  All I have around is a disk NPO "82" that I could swap it out with, is this ok?
I put the rig on 7000 and the freq. probe to TP1 and then CAL FACTR.  You said it should read 11915.  It reads 11341.  It DOES NOT change when moving the dial.
On the speaker, No AC detected.  I also jumpered it directly to the speaker just to check it out.  Nothing.  I jumpered the K2 speaker to my small wonders lab SW+ QRP rig and it works FB.
Thanks,
de Roland in Stockton

RE: 40 meter reciever not tuning

Don Wilhelm-3
Roland,

I suggest you start by re-checking the VCO voltage readings as specified on
page 61 of the manual.  At the time they were done, you ahould have had all
voltages within range.  Ask yourself what has changed in the VCO area since
that time - the answer would normally be 'nothing'.  You may want to tell us
what the VCO Voltage readings actually are.

For your speaker problem, if you know the speaker and external jack are OK,
the only thing left is the contacts in the headphone jack.  Make certain the
headphone jack is properly soldered at all pins - they are more difficult
than most to solder since the pins do not project through the board.  It is
possible that you can have a bad headphone jack, but check the soldering
first.

73,
Don W3FPR

Re: 40 meter reciever not tuning

Roland Whitsitt
Wow, You know I've done that test 4 times now and this time it was really
different on 3 bands on 30,40,15 meters I get 8.4v.  That is very different
from before.  They were always within range.
Before I did Phase III, my voltages were
40m hi=1.7  /  lo=3.2
30m hi=3.5  /  lo=4.1
15m hi=2.6  /  lo=5.3  now for all three of those bands only it's
hi-8.4  /  lo=8.4  so what did I do to throw all that off?  Just
phase III.
I don't get it.  You know,  I'm so close now I can taste it!  I have to
break off for family for a while then I'm going to look in on that speaker
advice you gave me.  It can only be so many things, right?  Then we'll nail
it down.

Thanks,
Roland in Stockton

I can tell now that there is continuity from the speaker jack to the control
board.  I don't get continuity from P3 to P5 on the control board.  The
schematic makes it look like a clean shot.  When I tried to trace it on the
board point to point, I get lost.  Seems like it's going through a lot of
coponents.  If it is a straight shot, perhaps there is a break in the path
on the board.  Could I rig a separate jumper wire to P5 from P3?

RE: 40 meter reciever not tuning

Don Wilhelm-3
Roland,

The speaker plugs into P5 on the RF Board - P5 on the Control Board is for
use with an external probe to the internal voltmeter in the K2 (only active
if the P3 jumper is set for EXT).

If I misunderstood your intent and you were actually referring to P5 on the
RF Board, then your headphone jack likely will not work either.  You should
have continuity between the junction of RF Board R35 and R36 and RF Board P5
with the headphone plug removed.  If you have continuity there AND the
headphone jack has audio, the speaker should work - unless you swapped
conductors  at either the speaker plug or the external speaker jack.

73,
Don W3FPR

RE: 40 meter reciever not tuning

Don Wilhelm-3
In reply to this post by Roland Whitsitt
Roland,

Are the other bands still the same as they used to be?  The high voltage
indicates that the PLL is attempting to reduce the capacity of the
varactors - which means that there is too much capacity in the VFO circuit
somewhere for those bands.  Check the value of C73 - it should be marked
'470'.

The only thing that is common for 30m and 15m is C73 (also common for 40
meters if the K60XV option is installed).  Go to the secondary menu and be
certain the D19 parameter is set to OFF.

You might check for solder splashes in the vicinity of Relay K13.

73,
Don W3FPR

Re: reciever now tuning, speaker wrks FB!

Roland Whitsitt
In reply to this post by Don Wilhelm-3
Ok, it is all working now!  I'm can't believe how I tried to be careful and
still made so many mistakes.  C73 was the problem.  I should have known
because I ran short of 820 caps and had an extra 470.  Changed out C73 and
everything came to life.  40,30,15 meters all tune now.  Oh the sweet sweet
sound of CW.  And the SSB sounds good too.
Here's the really funny one.  Where did P5 on the rf board come from? And
who put it there?  I've been messing with the control board all this time!
%!!*!!! hi hi
Once I found the correct P5 it worked FB...  the speaker that is.   Gosh, I
found other things too.  D39 wasn't installed. X5 & X6 crystals not
grounded.  I'm sure there is other stuff.
I need to do all the alignments and VCO checks again.  I'll do both Phase II
and Phase III.  I've done it several times now so no sweat.
Anyways,  A very big THANK YOU to you Don Wilhelm W3FPR and the group.  I'm
very novice on this stuff but with you folks there, it's what made this rig
work.  Without the group, this would have been a waste of money.  Now it's
an awesome rig.  I still got a couple of minor glitches but I'm going to see
if the re alignments take care of it.  (still flutters when I tune).
Thanks again!  I'll be back to let you all know how it goes.  I'm starting a
7 day stretch at work for swing shift so won't have much radio time for a
while.
