#5956 construction questions

Gentlemen (and any ladies, of course),

As you can see, I'm beginning construction on #5956 and was wondering a
few things. First off I will point out that I purchased the KBT2, KSB2,
KIO2 and K160RX options on top of the basic CW K2. My first question
deals with the KBT2; is it safe to use the KBT2 as the power source
during the initial testing by installing the included connector on the
RF Board or should I make up a temporary power cable using the included
plug? Secondly, is it ok to install the connectors for the options I
have so I don't have to take the case apart once I get it together for
the initial alignment tests; it's not that I have an aversion to taking
the radio back apart (wouldn't have bought the kit if I didn't like to
tinker with electronics), it's just that I want to be able to get on the
air with it as soon as I can after it's finished (hopefully that's done
by the 23rd). My final question is related to the trimming of P5 on the
control board for clearance when the KIO2 is installed; can I do that
before I install it?

The short answer is YES to all.

The long answer says that you will have to have a power supply to charge the
battery anyway, and one cannot always expect a battery 'out of the box' to
be fully charged, so it would be wise to just go ahead and make up a power
cable rather than using the battery.

The K2 manual indicates the best time to install the option headers - do it
just as the manual indicates and you will not go wrong, and you will achieve
your goal of getting it on the air at the first possilbe moment.

It is easier to trim P5 before it is installed - just don't mix the trimmed
one with the untrimmed one (there are 2 on the control board).

Don,

Thanks for the quick response to my questions. I will be picking up a
power supply after I get paid next week, but I'm hoping to have most of
the work done by Tuesday (I'm almost finished with the control board as
I write this). I'm finding that the kit is simpler to put together than
it appears when you first open the box. :) I would recommend this kit to
anyone that wants a quality radio and has the tools to build it with.
