A K2 Question

Irv [K3IRV] McWherter
I have seen a couple of these at friends homes, read some of 30 pages of
eham.net reviews, but I have not found an extensive review on the rig as a
trail radio.

I am not a SOTA guy, but I do enjoy going to parks, lighthouses, etc and
operating.  Is the K2 a good QRP choice for this outside of the shack
operating environment?

Thanks for the help and 73,

K3IRV - Irv.

Irv,

Yes, the K2 will serve you quite well for that type of operation. In its
most basic form, it is a CW 80 through 10 meter (except 60 meters)
transceiver which will go up to at least 10 watts (typically 12 to 15
watts).  Options extend that to SSB (with the KSB2 option), 60 meters
(K60XV option) and 160 meters (K160RX option).
If you are not working with resonant antennas, the KAT2 is recommended,
and you might want to consider the internal battery (KBT2 option).

If you are looking for a more compact CW only transceiver, you may want
to look at the K1 or even smaller, the KX1.

I *am* a "SOTA guy," and I use my K2 almost exclusively.  I'm giving
some thought to selling my KX1 setup just because I hardly ever use it
any more.  I originally had the KPA100 and KAT100 for the K2 but finally
sold them when I realized the K2 had become my field radio.

The K2 is not the radio for those who bushwhack their way to a
destination, or for KT5X, who literally runs up 14,000 foot mountains,
but for what you described, it is a truly great radio.

It works fine for portable operation. I usually take my K1 camping a
couple times a month during the warmer seasons, but occasionally take
the K2/10. The front panel of the K2 is very  close to the same size as
the KX3. In fact, if you remove the K2 front panel assembly, THAT is
almost exactly the same size as a KX3 (though it is useless that way).

K2 is a very versatile rig, and actually pretty small as ham
transceivers go.
