A K2 Thought

Jim Harris-4
<In reviewing the K2 manual prior to ordering/building
<I have noticed that there are several
<instructions to install a 'GROUP' of components then
<solder and trim the leads. Wouldn't this lead to
<missed solder connections or cause a less than
perfect <soldered joint. I should think like 'THE
TURTLE ' in <that slow and steady (one at a time) will
get you <there with a lot <less chance of an error in
assembly.

Just finished up K2 S/N 4878 a few days ago and now
awaiting the DSP and KPA100 options to arrive.  I'd
like to add my thoughts for what you may think they
are worth.

For inventorying I just did the misc. bag and the
first bag needed.  Each new bag was inventoried at the
start of that bag.  (No components were
missing...thanks Christine.)  I didn't have enough
bins for the hundreds of different types of parts.
When inventorying I assign bin numbers on the parts
list rather than components values on each bin.  As
each component comes out of it's bin I reverify it's
value.  I have a home copier that I use to make copies
of the parts list so I don't have to constantly flip
back and forth between the instructions and parts
list.  In most instances the group installations are
subdivided into smaller groups of 6-10 components.  I
find it best for me to stuff a subgroup and solder
before proceeding.  Next, I clip leads and visually
verify component values and soldering under a
magnifier that has a ringed floursecent light.  This
type magnifier/light eliminates shadows and the light
is nearly matched to daylight, in color, helping to
eliminate color problems with resistors and inductors.
I also have several other lights in the room to raise
the ambient light.

Just some ideas that might help someone.  But, to each
his own.

BTW, for what's it's worth.  After getting my rig on
the air I really had a debate with myself as to
whether I really needed a DSP in my K2.  Background
noise is so much lower on the K2 than on my 746pro
even with it's DSP functioning.  But, decided to go FB
with the options to get the absolute best performance.
