A few bugs in the P3 SVGA

tomb18
Just a summary from my side:
1) 1920X1080 is too wide, the screen doesn't display the right few inches
2) The svga display has frozen twice at 1400x900.  Seems to happen when returning from transmit
3) I was viewing the screen at +-100KHz wide and switched (programmed on the P3 function switch) to +-10KHz.  I then had to set the reference level at -75 on the SVGA while it was its usual -120 on the P3 display.
All this in about 30 minutes of use.
All the firmware is the latest.  I am using ham radio deluxe V5 as well.
Any news on a non-beta firmware release (lol)?

I had a lot of issues until I purchased a well shielded VGA cable. I'm not saying that is related to these issues, but was amazed at the cleaner display and no problems when transmitting.

Hi Tom,

No release date as of yet, we are working to do our best to release something that fixes as many known issues as possible.   See my comments below:

We are working with out VGA chip designer on this, at this time I do not have a date as to when it will be resolved.
2) The svga display has frozen twice at 1400x900.  Seems to happen when returning from transmit
Noted and on the list.
3) I was viewing the screen at +-100KHz wide and switched (programmed on the P3 function switch) to +-10KHz.  I then had to set the reference level at -75 on the SVGA while it was its usual -120 on the P3 display.
The SVGA and P3 share the same reference level settings. There was a bug in version 1.12 of P3 firmware which was fixed in 1.13 .  Are you using 1.13 now?  Also when press the REF LVL button on the P3 that adjusts both the P3 and the SVGA.  Can you explain
how you noted that the SVGA was at a different reference level?
All this in about 30 minutes of use.

Re: A few bugs in the P3 SVGA

Hi Paul,

I just checked to be sure.  The firmware is 1.13

I was at +-100 Khz, and then I pressed FN4 which is set to give a span of +-20 Khz (not +-10 as I mentioned).
I just tried it again, and it acted up again.  I turned on the P3, it was at +-20KHz, I then switched to +- 100 KHz (function FN5) and then switched back to +-20KHz.   The SVGA screen then put the reference level at -95 whereas the P3 display is set at -115.
If I now turn the reference level counter-clockwise (i.e the P3 display now does not show the signals at all and -20 to -55 is the scale) the SVGA display keeps rising the reference level up to -30.  So the noise which is usually at -115, is now right up at -35.

Now if I rotate the ref level clockwise, the noise level stays fixed on the SVGA screen, but the scale keeps changing. As I continue to rotate the control clockwise, the signals start to show up on the P3 but they are 20 db lower.
It now continues to exhibit the funny level changes.
If I now change the span it is fine ..  If I try the sequence again, it doesn't do it anymore.
The computer is not connected to the K3 or the P3.
Now, its not doing it anymore..it's as if it does this when cold....I'll wait an hour and see.

Re: A few bugs in the P3 SVGA

Hi, Paul it just did it again.  This time switching to +-50 with a function key.  What I have noticed is that if you continue to rotate ref level clockwise, the SVGA signal goes lower and lower.  It now displays -145, and the signal is just peaking above this.

Change the span and it is ok again.

I just found another bug.  Keep increasing the ref level (clockwise) and everything is fine for a while.  The signal goes higher as expected on both the P3 and SVGA, but keep doing it...As you get down to -145, the P3 has the signal off the top of the screen, but the signal on the SVGA keeps going lower.  The SVGA now shows from -140 to -165, but the signal has dropped below the 165.  You can just barely see some signal peaks rising above the baseline.
I bet the issues are related.

Thanks Tom,

Let me see if I can duplicate it.  If you can get it to happen again, can you give me a call at the main Elecraft number, my extension is 122.

I've had an item #2 freeze a time or two...it has always gone away after another xmit or so. I always suspect RF in the cable, espically since it was disasterous at first until i bought a new well shielded vga cable. And I have item #1 of course. I haven't tried to cause the rest...not noticed anyway with casual use.
I'm quite happy with it, I know y'all are constantly on top of any issues.

Hi Tom,

Regarding the problem you found turning REF LVL all the way up, what is your SCALE set to?

Thanks,

Paul

I have had several bugs appear also.  I have just went back to V 1.09 until the smoke clears.

Hi Paul,
The scale is at at 31.  But the effect is completely independent on scale.  If I turn the knob for ref level clockwise, the P3 spectrum keeps going up until it goes off the screen and the svga does as well until the -140 point shows up and then the svga spectrum goes down below the -140 and as you continue it eventually only shows a few peaks above the limit of -170.
This is always reproducible.
