AM on the K2?

David C Dawson-2
How complicated would it be to add AM capability to the K2 (TX+RX)?

I have operated AM on 10 meters on my Icom 730 and it was fun. Good
old AM has an endearing quaint quality somewhat lacking in SSB.

I wouldn't want to sacrifice SSB, though.

Thoughts? Has anyone done this?
Thanks

David,

Yes, AM transmission would be possible (but not practical) - by pass the
filter on the KSB2 board and unbalance the carrier balance pot - but be
careful not to overdrive the balanced modulator or any of the following
stages - the carrier will be there constantly, so you have to keep the power
output low (I would guess about 4 to 5 watts max).

Reception is a different matter - replace the product detector with an AM
detector and add some AF amplifiers to bring the detector output up to
something usable.  This would be a real 'butcher job' on the K2, but it
could be made to work.

As I said - possible, but not practical.  Boatanchor AM transmitters and
receivers would be a better choice IMHO - you could find a plate modulated
transmitter and have great sounding AM.
