I had an opportunity to test the APF last night during the 1296MHz ARRL EME contest.
This application is interesting because of the very uniform background noise and the lack of QSB- at least as we know it on the HF bands. There is a very short term QSB that is a result of the apparent rocking motion of the moon with respect to earth- libration fading. This can take a weak dash and chop it into 2 very nice dits- but that's another story
.
Anyway, the APF performed admirably and a number of times made the difference between copying a call and missing it. I made extensive comparisons between the APF and my Alpha Delta analog peaking circuit. This comes down to very subjective calls. While I think the Alpha Delta may have had the edge- it is a very close call.
I would like to see a bit more audio gain when the APF is engaged as overall noise decreases remarkably when it is on.
I have some .WAV files if anyone is interested in hearing the comparison- they are large- 10M in one instance.
Thanks to the Elecraft gang for making a great rig even greater.
