Abusing a K2 ... or any rig

Ken G Kopp
Ron's comments about re-design of the output circuit are
spot on. The minuscule gain in output power simply isn't
worth the likely stress and/or harm to the K2.  You say it's
used for emergency communications in the field.  IMHO
this is -not- the place to abuse the radio.

The same thing seems to be going on in relation to the KX3's
output power and the efforts to come up with heat sinks for
the PA.

I'm reminded of a local who's infamous for "blowing up" his
rigs.  He simply can't accept the fact that there -are- design
limitations.

Another reason to never purchase a used radio. (;-)

About a hundred years ago, I pointed to a mark on the airspeed indicator
dial and asked my flight instructor, "What's that for?"  He said, "Don't
fly faster than that."  When I asked him, "What happens if I do?", he
replied, "The wings come off."  Design limits do matter.

Before I bought my KPA500, I began running my 1,500 watt amp at 500
watts to see if I could tolerate the 4.8dB power reduction.  I did it
for about a year.  I concluded I couldn't really tell any operational
difference, so I bought the KPA500.

I really really doubt anyone would notice 1.6dB power increase ... on
either end.
