Please advise what advantages there are to purchasing a Factory Assembled
and Tested K-3 vs. a Kit? Such as, what sections of the K-3 will be better aligned by the factory? Sorry if this is a repeat question, I couldn't find related results searching the archives. 73, Dick- K9OM ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Hi Dick,
Alignment of the K3 is performed either by using a computer utility or via the front panel. You don't have to "adjust" anything. Also, assembly of the K3 is like putting a PC together. There is no soldering involved. The only difference between one option and the other is time and money. 73 de James K2QI -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of [hidden email] Sent: Friday, January 15, 2010 4:35 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] Advantages of Factory Assembed & Tested K-3 vs. a Kit? I think the K3 goes together much better then a PC. I built my K3 a week ago and I am still in awe of the precision of engineering that went into that K3 kit. Parts went together smoothly just as if they were designed to do that -- of course, which they are but the fit was perfect.
There is only one little wish and that is I wish for slightly smaller fingers for just one or two steps in the K3 kit building process. Now, this was really not a problem but it was a bit tight but still what I would call easy. I mean, no sweat on my brow for this job at all. Alignment? What alignment? I used the K3 Utility program -- your alignment steps consist of hitting a few buttons on the K3 Utility screen! Simple as 3.14159+. And, it is probably just as simple to do it from the screen but a little more time consuming. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jan 15, 2010, at 2:23 PM, James Sarte wrote: > Hi Dick, > > Alignment of the K3 is performed either by using a computer utility or via > the front panel. James and other K3 users,
There is one other advantage of the kit. Having assembled the radio one has a better idea as to how to install future hardware modifications or additions. It may be a small advantage but I believe it is a real one. 73 Doug EI2CN -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of James Sarte Sent: 15 January 2010 22:23 To: [hidden email]; [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Advantages of Factory Assembed & Tested K-3 vs. aKit? Oh I agree with you 100% Doug. I "built" my K3, and was glad I did when it
came time to install some modifications. 73 James K2QI -----Original Message----- From: Doug Turnbull [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Friday, January 15, 2010 5:45 PM To: 'James Sarte'; [hidden email]; [hidden email] Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Advantages of Factory Assembled & Tested K-3 vs. aKit? Hello Gentleman,
There is another advantage for kit version. For a non-radio man like myself, the assembly process enables me to understand the architecture of a modern transceiver. It is educational. Re: [Elecraft] Advantages of Factory Assembled & Tested K-3 vs. aKit? I would imagine, judging from the ads, that a factory built K3 may have a slightly higher resale value but that doesn't matter to me since I doubt I'll ever sell mine!
Also, since I saved nearly $400 building it that's probably a wash anyway. I sure enjoyed assembling the radio and it definitely gives me a sense of pride and even attachment to my K3.
