I’m building a K1 for a fellow ham whose hands won’t allow the fine soldering work that this kit demands. This is the second K1 that I have built.
All of the test points before alignment and test, part 1 have been nominal. I have successfully completed the tests on the LED and LCD/Error Codes without problem. When I plug in a pair of stereo headphones, the funny business begins … There is no output from the headphones. I rotate the AF GAIN without change. And, the LCD display immediately goes blank when I plug in the headphones. That said, I can remove the headphones and see the display fine. I can tap the MENU, set and edit the STL and STP without a problem. But, plug in headphones and the K1 goes blank. I have been reading this list long enough to know that 99% of problems during a build have to do with cold solder joints. I believe I’ve looked at the solder joints. I reflowed the 3 joints at the headphone jack. Any ideas about how to troubleshoot this problem? I’m missing something in this process. I will go back and make sure that I haven’t left any parts out, but I don’t think this is the case. Thanks in advance. gene WG7GW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

Yes, you would be correct. The primary problem with most of the errors is an operator problem.
It helps when testing the headphones … to actually plug them into the headphone jack … and not the keyer jack … Ahem … stand down … this was a case of operator error … ;-/ gene WG7GW Back to lurking … On Jun 23, 2014, at 8:08 PM, Eric Ross <[hidden email]> wrote: > It sounds like you might have a short that occurs when the headphones are plugged in. I would check the normally open circuit that goes to the headphones. My guess is that one side is shorted to ground or another power supply rail. I have never built a K1, so I am just basing this on standard troubleshooting technique. > > Eric > WB7SDE > > > On Jun 23, 2014, at 19:03 , Eugene Worth <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I’m building a K1 for a fellow ham whose hands won’t allow the fine soldering work that this kit demands.
