Well, on Alignment and Test, Part 1, I fired up the K@ for the FIRST
TIME... Heard the relays click. I've got LED light but no message (blank) Now what? I read the troubleshooting section. I am getting 12 vdc into the unit. Where do I find +5v and +8v supplies? Where is J3? Pin 32 on MCU of control board is 5V exactly I listened at 4 Mhz on an SWL rcvr (no BFO) ... what should I hear? (I hear nothing) I'm afraid I'm a bit intimidated at this point. john _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. John,
Ok, being intimidated is not something unusual, just step back and take things one at a time. First, the troubleshooting section is not likely to be useful to you at this stage of construction, that is written for those having a fully functioning receiver section and transmitter section which will not be present until Alignment and Test III - Troubleshooting for the receiver can be useful at Alignment and Test II because you should have a fully functional receiver for 40 meters at that point. Now to your questions - the +5 v supply and the +8 v supply start at the regulators you mounted (with screws) on the Control Board - the 8 volt regulator is the one nearer the top of the board - J3 is the DC input coaxial power connector. At this point, the best guidance that I can offer is to check the soldering, and then re-check the soldering, and when you have completed that, check the soldering!!! Soldering and improper component placement are the most frequent causes of problems. You can check the orientation of ICs and diodes by referring to the component placement diagrams in the back of the manual. Don't forget to check the soldering at all the connector pins. One of the common 'lack of display' problems is failure to solder pin 1 of the U1 socket on the Front Panel board - should you find that not soldered, cut away a bit of the socket and solder the pin from the top of the board. You may want to solder the pins of the LCD display from the top of the board as well - since the pins do not protude very far through the board, it is common for the solder joint to look OK, but the LCD pin did not receive enough heat and is not well soldered. Take things one step at a time and examine your work carefully. If you can solicit a second pair of eyes to examine your work, they may spot something that you are overlooking. As I indicated previously, the most common errors are soldering problems and improper component placement. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > Well, on Alignment and Test, Part 1, I fired up the K@ for the FIRST > TIME... > > Heard the relays click.
