Announcing the Elecraft K3 Transceiver: 10/100W, 160-6m, Assembled or Kit

Greetings!

This afternoon at the DX Convention in Visalia, CA, we unveiled a new
top-of-the-line transceiver -- the Elecraft K3. This is the culmination
of three years of design, test, and refinement, and we believe the K3
will set a new standard for performance and value in its class. It has
features and performance comparable to present radios ranging from
$4000 to $12000.

(We'd like to thank the many surprised convention attendees. What they
all said boils down to something like "Yes!")

A full K3 web page will be set up by Monday, complete with order form
and other details. Meanwhile, please take a look at the temporary page:

Among other things, you'll find a very high-resolution front panel
photo (as well as other photos):

There's also an order form that could be printed and mailed, but
sometime on Monday the on-line order page will be up and running, which

As explained on the order form, you can reserve a K3 now for initial
shipments in July. A 50% deposit is requested if you'd like to secure
one of the first 200 production units (serial numbers 20-220,
probably).

Here's a quick summary of the K3's specs:

   - K3/100 and K3/10 models (the K3/10 can be upgraded very easily,
internally, to a K3/100)

   - Basic K3 price ranges from $1399 to $1989 depending on whether you
start with the
     10-watt or 100-watt model, and whether you choose factory assembled
or
     modular, no-soldering, kit (this is the subject of the next email).

   - Desktop/portable size:  4"H x 10"W x 10"D (10 x 25 x 25 cm) --
optimized for both
     home and travel use

   - All modes (SSB, CW, DATA, AM, FM, plus AM-sync receive, and
built-in PSK31/TTY decoder)

   - High-dynamic range, down-conversion architecture, plus 32-bit I.F.
DSP
     for software-defined capabilities (and lots of room for future
expansion)

   - Optional subreceiver with *identical* performance to the main
receiver,
     including a fully independent front end, its own set of roofing
filters,
     its own DSP, and low-noise synthesizer; binaural or combined
receiver audio

   - Up to five crystal roofing filters *per receiver*, with bandwidths
as narrow as 200 Hz

   - Narrow ham-band filtering, plus optional general-coverage receive
filters
     (can be added to either or both receivers)

   - Internal 100-W ATU option with two antenna jacks

   - 100 W PA module includes two large fans, circuit breaker, full
parameter monitoring

   - All signal sources phase-locked to common 49.380 MHz reference
oscillator;
     1 PPM TCXO option, firmware-correctable to better than 0.5 PPM

   - Built-in PSK31, RTTY, and CW decoding and display allows use of
     digital modes with or *without* a computer; use CW keyer paddle or
     attached computer for casual, two-way data QSOs

   - Advanced noise reduction; auto- and manual notch. Noise blanker
included (both
     I.F. hardware pulse blanker and DSP noise blanking)

   - Easy-to-use DSP shift/width and locut/hicut controls with automatic
crystal filter
     selection based on selected passband width (in real-time -- no
filter calculation delays)

   - Dedicated CW/voice message buttons; optional digital voice recorder

   - 100 general frequency memories with alphanumeric text labeling,
plus 4 scratchpad memories per band

   - Full-custom, optimized, segmented LCD with two VFO displays,

Hallo Wayne et al,

WOW! Congrats on what looks like a very nice radio!

Before I start doing stupid things like filling out order forms and
the like:

1) Do any of the options conflict with each other, i.e. if A is
installed, then B can not be?

2) If the KRX3 is installed one would need two of the KFL3A-200,
KFL3A-250, KFL3A-400, KFL3A-500, KFL3A-2.8K, KFL3A-6K, KFL3B-FM, and
KBPF3 to have two maximum feature RXes?

3) If one installs the KBPF3, what impact does this have on the ham
band front filters?

4) Is the K3 avaidable with an optional KPA1500? hi hi

No, except that you're limited to 5 crystal roofing filters per
receiver.

See above -- only five crystal filters per receiver. You can set them
up differently, if you prefer. For example you could put a really
narrow filter only on the main receiver, and put an FM filter only in
the subreceiver. In any case you can add filters incrementally.

You'd only need two KBPF3's if you wanted general coverage on both
receivers.

None whatsoever. The KBPF3's filters are switched in only when needed,
and added strays are completely negligible. The KBPF3 mounts just above
the main band-pass filter array.

Most engineering staff members were redirected to the K3 project, which
actually started before the amp, and which we decided should be
finished first. But we'll go back to the amp as time permits. Sorry,
can't give you a date....

Do the KBPF3's count as one of the five roofing filters?


If the KRX3 is present and multiple transverters are connected to the
K3, will it be possible to transmit with one transverter while receiving
with another transverter? For example, would it be possible to transmit
on 2m while receiving on 70cm? I'm wondering about satellite operation.

This is a much nicer surprise than an amp, in my opinion! It looks like
everything I wanted in a K3, and a lot more. :-)

Excellent.  Numbers for this, IMD3, BDR, etc. will be forthcoming.  We
need to be sure we've got it right before we release them.

Preliminary numbers beat the K2 in every respect.

No, but there is a very responsive design team that will be adding new
features, and with all firmware and programmable logic being Flash based
and updateable over the computer port, today's K3 will be just a new as

in a closet -- or a remote base -- and use a virtual control panel on
their PC< the hooks are all in place, and there will be an API for that :-)

Few questions related to the new panadapter kit I'm working on:

1. What is the IF frequency at the K3's IF output port?
2. Is the K3's IF output port wideband (ahead of the roofing filter) or
narrowband?
3. Is the IF frequency sense inverted on some bands, as is the K2?
4. Don't expect an answer to this, but have to ask. Before I invest 6
months developing the new Z92 panadpater kit aimed at K2 (and now K3),
is there going to be an official Elecraft panadapter accessory for the K3?

I see there is an IF output (2nd IF I assume). What are the IF
frequencies? Does the IF output follow rcvr selection? If I connect it
to my Z90 Panadapter, can I totally disable the roofing filters or does
it default to the widest one? If the latter, will you offer a w-i-d-e LC
filter option, or do I need to pull out the 1st IF ahead of the roofing
filters? What is the BW if I don't put roofing filters in one receiver?

I could go on, but I don't want to spoil your convention ;-)

K1 Problem

I have a problem I think I solved, but would like a few comments.

I installed a new K1 2 Band Board and all things went smooth till I tried to
send with ATU

First it would send on 40 meters, then at 80 I got a short chirp and a low
buzz intread of 800 Hz sound

So I found a bigger power supply ( 2a vs my old .400 millia) and also
changed the antenna and all things are find.

Life is Short, Learn Morse Code and have fun.

No, these are LC filter networks at RF rather than crystal filters at IF.

With the subreceiver and the right connections to the transverters, it
*should* be possible.  Satellite capability is one of my design goals
with the K3 :-)

Remember that the K3 DSP, MCU and programmable logic are all Flash
based, and can be updated via your computer suing the included PC
application software.  So features and functionality will be added over
time, and early radios will be capable of the same new features as later
radios.
