Any solution to the audio blast issue yet ?

Enno, PF5X
Hi all,

I wonder what the status of the audio 'artifact' or blast is. According to
PA4N, who uses F/W 3.30, it still happens, be it rarely. As a headphone
user, such audio blast is quite unacceptable to me and therefore I hope
Elecraft is addressing this issue with some priority.

Can Lyle or Wayne comment on this ?? Thanks !

Regards,

K3: DVR open ground problem

Matt Zilmer
K3 #24 was upgraded to include the DVR earlier this year.  It worked
fine while testing just after installation and configuring.

I used the DVR a few times for contesting, but not much recently.  I
noticed recently that any recording I make has the hum of an open mic
(ground or shield?) superimposed on the voice signal.  Seems like
there might be a bad connection, but looking at the schematic this
makes no sense - to have this problem with the DVR only.  The audio
straight  from the mic should have this problem as well.  The mic
audio is fine though.

Anyone have experience with a problem like this?  I will do the usual
- uninstalling, re-installing (reseating the connector), but since the
mic signal at the connector is digital I don't think this will help.

All ideas appreciated.

If I may chime in here, I hope very strongly that nobody is using deep-
in-the-ear type earbuds with the K3 or any other radio.  TO DO SO
MIGHT RUIN YOUR EARS.

I have some Shure deep-in-the-ear earbuds that I use with my iPod on
airplane flights.  They have wonderful fidelity and also almost
completely shut out the roar of the jet engines.  BUT, they take about
ten seconds minimum to get out of my ears.  If some radio produced an
anomalously loud blast while using them, your ears could be ruined
before you could react.

I read an article a while back about an engineer who lost his hearing
in just such an accident.  In the old days, many soundcard
manufacturers installed their soundcards with a default of full
volume.  This guy was trying a new soundcard using deep-in-the-ear
earbuds.  By the time he could get them out of his ears, he had
permanent damage.

Hi Enno

FWIW I have been installing and using the latest Betas as they are
released.  I use headphones at the rig many hours a day and have yet
to experience the blast.  Whatever it is, I'm not triggering it [so
far] on K3 #2887.  It's not an "issue" hr.

Are you saying *you* have heard the blast?  If so, what were you doing
at the time?  What mode, what activity, what controls were you
adjusting or had you recently adjusted?  I suspect more clues about
what triggers the blast will help trace it.

Hi Matt.  I used the DVR controlled by N1MM in the last NAQP phone contest and it
worked and sounded fine.

A peak limiter combined with a fast short or open circuit is the only way to
prevent ear damage.  I've listened to earphones "protected" by vdr and,
although the peak voltage delivered to the headset is limited, the waveform
simply flattens off and the audio power pulse is still deafening.

This problem I think is addressed by telecom users eg in call centres and
has been around a loooong time.  One of these days I'll make a little
outboard suppressor to use with my headphones where-ever I take them.

Re: Any solution to the audio blast issue yet ?

In reply to this post by Gary Hinson
Hi Gary,

I think Enno was making his remarks here on the Elecraft reflector
because of an earlier remark that *I* made on a Dutch K3 email list,
and that he was referring to the audio blast that *I* encountered.

I was in a CW QSO on 20 meters at the moment the audio blast
occurred. I probably had bandwidth set to 400 Hz, using my 400 Hz
filter, and may very well have had the NR on, probably at setting
F1-1. NB most probably was off. I don't recall having adjusted any
controls just before. At the moment the audio blast happened, I was
in QSO with DP1POL and was sending my report at that very moment.

Although the blast startled me, I did have the wits to continue
sending my report, before pulling off my headphones and switching the
rig off and on in order to stop the sound. AF GAIN was set to low.
This may explain my relatively cool reaction, as I have heard from
others here on the reflector that had only one thing left in their
minds when the blast occurred: get them phones off my ears!

Hope this helps a bit.

Frank PA4N

You guys must have missed this:

"This is being addressed in the current pre-beta test version.
   "73, Eric  WA6HHQ"

Hang in there. Until this is fixed for sure, I'm not using headphones at all.
Not worth the risk.
