Aptos / vendor soldering

Ken Kopp
Since the PowerPole soldering issue was raised .....

I found the short black jumper wires soldered to the
two antenna connector SO-239's were poorly done.
Both had about 3/8" of exposed center conductor
soldered into the connectors and at an angle.

No matter though ... I replaced both with lovely BNC
SO-239 replacement kits from Oak Hills Research.
I use Pomona BNC patch cords for almost everything
here and so the change was "a natural".  I did rework
the male pin ends of the two wires and added shrink
tubing over the solder connections on both ends of the
wires

Maybe this is the first after market mod to a K3. (:-))

K3 - UHF/BNC

Well done, Ken!   That is the one mod I was planning for my K3 when it
arrives in Feb.  I was planning to make just one aluminum panel piece and
mount it to the S0-239 mounting holes and use two BNC bulkheads in it.  I
was unaware that Oak Hills had pre-made fittings for this.  Using two of
these is certainly an option if I don't want to do the cutting/drilling.
Thanks for the tip - it had been awhile since I looked at the Oak Hills
website.

By the way, everything here in the shack and test bench is also all BNC.  I
never understood the attraction of UHF connectors.  To me they seem large,
cumbersome and aggravating.  Glad I don't know how much $ I have spent in
UHF/BNC adapters over the years  ;>)

Re: K3 - UHF/BNC

Ken Kopp
Craig,

The Oak Hills part number is OP-SB2 and there
are two sets in the pack for $7.50.  The metal work
is very good, and the pins are gold plated.
