Assembly Manual Feedback

Simon (HB9DRV)
Page 6, item 6: Allen wrenches.

It can be very difficult to find imperial wrenches outside of the US and UK,
some US suppliers actually include these when shipping overseas. Myself I
have a full set (wrenches that is).

Congratulations to the authors, this is a fine manual.

I believe these may be supplied with the kit (it's item 4 by the way)

Are these the same size Allen wrenches as provided with the K2?

I don't have my manual here at work, so I couldn't check.

Re: Assembly Manual Feedback

I don't have a K2, the K3 manual states

Allen wrenches, 5/64² (2mm) and .050²

So if you remember the sizes of the K2 ones .....

I believe Allen wrenches will be supplied with the kit, as they obviously
are with the K2.

We include these with the kit. In fact they're the same as we supply
with the K2.

Re: Assembly Manual Feedback

Simon (HB9DRV)
Ah-hah, I've only ever seen one K2 - Peter PH1PH brought his here in 2004.

The imperial socket wrenches could be a problem - maybe we could buy 1/4"
and 3/16" from Elecraft? I think I have an old bicycle spanner with 1/2" for
the bigger nuts.

Micro-tools of US (has German distributor) do a nice range.

US link: https://www.micro-tools.com/store/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=26399

Europe link:
http://www.micro-tools.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?LTPLanguage=EN&Screen=PROD
&Product_Code=26591&Category_Code=NUI&Store_Code=MTE

(that link may split)

These are Wiha tools and they carry ESD versions too.

I could not use US store - won't allow me to purchase from US and ship, I
had to purchase from Euro store at almost twice the cost - and the tools did
not come in a pouch as they do in the US.

I won't be doing that again - damn expensive - I will us my US colleague who
travels here every month.

Anyway, the tools are very good - you could buy just a 1/4 driver if you so
wished

These should not be a problem, Simon. Nut drivers for 1/4" and 3/16" are
normally supplied with inexpensive computer tool kits. These should be
available locally and would be much cheaper than obtaining them from the
US.

Simon and others with only metric tools,

You can use the next larger metric size with no problem - especially if
6 point deep sockets are used and all nut-drivers I have ever seen are 6
point.
5 mm works well for 3/16 inch nuts
6.5 or 7 mm works for the 1/4 inch size - there is a slight mismatch
here, use a 6 point if you must use the 7 mm size.
13 mm works with the 1/2 inch size.

So if you have only metric tools available, these sizes will work fine -
I just checked for a good fit with my set of metric sockets, and the
sizes shown above are quite workable.

Hi,

I've already been sent a link to a 10 quid computer toolkit which I'll buy,
problem solved.

BTW - do you see nuts in computers these days? Outside staring at the screen
there are many, but inside?

Simon, et al:

Speaking for myself here, with NO current approval of Elecraft, I'd
be VERY surprised if Elecraft didn't SUPPLY the Allen wrenches, as
they've always done with all of their other rigs.
