I've been using a MFJ-994B with my ALS-600 for about two years, and it has
worked great (used it with my Yaesu MKV). I've recently upgraded to the
MFJ-998 because it has a digital readout, and an amplifier bypass feature
(now using with my K3). I had modified my ARB-704 with an amp-bypass
feature, but now with my K3 and this feature built into the MFJ-998, I've
done away with the ARB-704. The amp bypass feature is really neat. The amp
enable out from the K3 goes to the amp-in RCA jack on the MFJ-998, and the
amp-out RCA jack on the MFJ-998 then goes to the amplifier. So when you
push the button to start tuning on the MFJ-998, it automatically takes the
amp off-line before tuning starts and then puts it back on-line when tuning
stops.
I set my K3 to output 10 watts when I push the TUNE button, and I leave my
MFJ-998 in the auto-tune position (where I set it to automatically retune if
the SWR is greater than 2:1). So when I move to an antenna that isn't
resonant, I press the TUNE button on the K3. The K3 puts out the 10 watt
carrier, and the MFJ-998 automatically tunes if the SWR is greater than 2:1.
It doesn't matter if my ALS-600 is in OPERATE mode or not, as the MFJ-998
takes it off line during tuning.
I have reviews of both the MFJ-994B and the MFJ-998 on my website at
