What is the battery number for the B/B in the K3?
Mine needs replacing and don't want to take apart the K3 twice. Page 48 in the K3 manual-Real Time Clock Battery Replacement. It is a CR2032, BR2032, or equivalent. Maybe it is time to check the one in my K3.

Yes, Battery Low refers to your external (12V) power supply voltage. It's a
confusing term and should be changed, as almost nobody uses a battery for their main supply on the K3, so why is it called a battery? Regarding the RTC, it doesn't keep very good RT, so is there any harm in just letting it go dead and not replacing it? I use a battery maintained by a charger system - complete uninterruptible 12V power. Guess I'm "almost nobody". > > Regarding the RTC, it doesn't keep very good RT, so is there any harm in > just letting it go dead and not replacing it? Having a dead battery corroding in your radio is not a good thing. And for the work required to remove it, you might as well replace it and get another decade of service. If you don't use the clock, just take the CR2032 battery out!
Save money and ease your minds about leaking. However, I have never seen one leak in the thousands of K3's I have worked on. I have only replaced the battery upon request as I have never seen one actually be dead. There is no indication that the internal clock battery is low or dead other than the clock does keep time To see if it is dead, just set the clock then turn off the radio and pull the DC power. Time will be wacky when you check it. Also if you take the Front Panel off the radio, the clock will need resetting. If you see BAT LOW, your DC supply voltage is lower than the setting in the BAT MIN config menu. Not related to the clock battery. I’ve never seen one leak, either. CR2032 batteries are ubiquitous. My car fobs, various other electronic remotes, my memory keyer, portable calculator, gate and garage door openers, and several other odd bits around the house use them and others of the same chemistry but different physical size) all over the place. I have allowed to sit in their devices unused for years.
Maybe I live a charmed life, but I have NEVER seen one “leak” and destroy something. (Wish I could say that about AAA Duracells, which were designed specifically to destroy whatever you put them in). I don’t think how-ever-many-thousand K3 radios out there need to be opened up, the 2m module removed, the 2nd receiver module removed, just to make sure the battery isn’t leaking. Of course I don’t use the Cute Kitty (or whatever) brand battery from the cheap imported junk store, either. There’s a tendency to unnecessarily generate a sense of panic over everything … Grant NQ5T K3 #2091 KX3 #8342 > On Jan 15, 2019, at 12:37 PM, Keith Trinity WE6R <[hidden email]> wrote: > > However, I have never seen one leak in the thousands of K3's I have worked on. > I have only replaced the battery upon request as I have never seen one actually be dead. > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

My K3 is serial no. 0007 and the clock is still running on the original
battery. 73, Victor, 4X6GP Rehovot, Israel Formerly K2VCO CWops no. 5 http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ On 15/01/2019 19:37, Keith Trinity WE6R wrote: > If you don't use the clock, just take the CR2032 battery out! > Save money and ease your minds about leaking. > However, I have never seen one leak in the thousands of K3's I have > worked on. > I have only replaced the battery upon request as I have never seen one > actually be dead. > There is no indication that the internal clock battery is low or dead > other than the clock does keep time > To see if it is dead, just set the clock then turn off the radio and > pull the DC power. Just a suggestion for a battery source: Harbor Freight. I've been using CR2032's on my dog's illuminated collar (uses two batteries at a time), and they've been outlasting the "name brands" that I'd buy at Home Depot. If you're shy about using batteries made out of the country, just check the origins of the ones you buy a a local store! The wrapping's from one place (it says "distributed by") and the battery from somewhere else.Plus, for a pack of four, I paid less than I would for a pack of two of the "name brand"! After replacing one in the K3, I now have three more to use on the dog collar! Can't beat that with a stick...even better, don't forget to use a coupon if you have one...73, Bert N4CW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
Perhaps someone will come up with petite or very tiny jumper cables.
That might solve the Low Battery issue. Maybe a "jumper cable kit". :-) 73 Bob, K4TAX ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
