It "sounds" like the best-sounding transceiver
or ham rig SOUND came out of VACUUM TUBE rigs. I notice every ham that refers back to ".... the best sounding rig I ever had was ...." - is talking a tube rig. This is controversial in some corners - but there is something about that gaseous medium, electrons flowing thru space or vacuum, and "iron" transformers here and there - that gives these rigs that great sound. They seem to have a good portion of "bounce" and "springiness" in their circuitry. Perhaps audio momentum? Somewhere in the IEEE Vacuum Tube archives of 1982 - they must have saved this information. This may be one reason why 100 Watt monaural amplifiers from McIntosh, command such high prices, 30 year after they came on the scene. They have matdched PAIRS of Vacuum Tubes, and mega-iron transformers. ... started my ham career with 1625's in a home-brewed plate modulator AM rig. (1625's were surplus from WWII and my dad) That blue glow on a winter's eve - warmed up the shack. The best sounding rig I've ever used was the K1. Best sounding in terms
of nice smooth CW note. The 2nd best sounding rig I've ever used was the Drake 2B. Great sounding CW audio but so much else with the rig was not great that it didn't stick around. My 3rd best sounding rig is the K2. It sounds better than the 830s and TenTec Omni V it replaced. Sounds better than the R4A that I tried to like. Sounded better than the Century 22. And when you take overall RX performance into account (including AGC action), it was a far more useable rig than the 2B (which I *almost* regret selling) and the K1. - Keith N1AS - - K2 5411.ssb.100 -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Fred (FL) It "sounds" like the best-sounding transceiver or ham rig SOUND came out of VACUUM TUBE rigs.
