BetaFirmware-download, the easy way

Hello,
this is for the users of Firefox, it describes an easy and fast way to
download the Beta-Firmware from the elecraft-server using FTP.
After installation of FireFTP, an ADDON for Firefox, the latest beta is
only a few clicks away.

Start Firefox, click on the button that is situated between BOOKMARKS
and HELP. The German version says EXTRAS here, other languages may
differ. Click on ADDONS to open the  list of your installed ADDONS.
Click DOWNLOAD ADDONS, then VIEW ALL ADDONS. You will be directed to
Mozilla's Addons-page.
On the left, you will see a list of categories, click on the 3rd from
the top, it reads DOWNLOAD Administration. On the next page, locate
FireFTP, click ADD TO FIREFOX. The Addon will be downloaded, you will be
prompted to allow installation. Click INSTALL. Restart firefox.

Now, under EXTRAS, you will find  FireFTP. Click on it.
A new TAB will open. Click CREATE ACCOUNT, enter an account name and a
category name, e.g. Elecraft & Firmware. Enter ftp.elecraft.com as the
host. Username and password are not required, click on ANONYMOUS.
Click CONNECTION, enter your local folder where you store new firmware
you intend to upload to your K3. Or select it by browsing to it and
click USE CURRENT.

As the remote folder, enter K3/firmware/beta .

Click OK. You're done.

If you want to download a new beta in future, just start firefox, click
FireFTP, then CONNECT. FireFTP connects to the Elecraft FTP-server, you
will see the latest beta-firmware, e.g. k3fw3rxx.zip.
Drag and drop it to your local folder, Fire FTP will download it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, select OPEN and expand it to your
firmware-folder . Close Firefox and start K3-Utility.
Voila.

not trying to be one-up-man-ship, but for those with OSX, it's even  
simpler...

While in Finder, type cmd-K, a dialogue will appear, type ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta
  into the upper input field, click the plus button to add it to your  
favourites. Now just click the Connect button and the Elecraft server  
will appear listed under 'SHARED' in finder windows and you access the  
files there like any other file on your hard disk. Anytime you want to  
access the site in future, just use cmd-k and click connect.

You can do that in Windows as well. Just copy ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta and paste it into the Address field of Windows Explorer (or just type it in) and press Enter. You should now see two files, hfwnotes.rtf and the latest firmware zip file, which are on the Elecraft server. Click Favorites, Add to Favorites and give it a name like "Elecraft Firmware". Now if you double click on the firmware zip file it opens in a new window and you can drag and drop the contents to the firmware utility upload folder.

Whenever you want to download new firmware, just click Favorites, Elecraft Firmware. Easy.

For people who might not be using Firefox you might want to check out
FileZilla.  This is a very good, free program; the URL is:
http://filezilla-project.org.  You will want the client - not the server.

I use FileZilla at work a lot, but until Martin's message hadn't thought of
using it for grabbing the Elecraft betas.  (Martin - thanks for jogging my
memory!)

Once installed you can set it up using the File/Site Manager... menu
selection.

The way I have mine set up is that I start the program; hit a drop down for
"my sites"; and select my Elecraft beta entry.  It connected to
ftp.eleectraft.com; goes to K3/firmware/beta and in another pane displays
the local folder where I will be copying everything to.  From there it's
just drag and drop!

To add another possibility, I use Total Commander (www.ghisler.com)

It is a decent filemanager and has an FTP Client built in (in addition to many other goodies)
I had to setup the Elecraft FTP site once, choose the beta firmware directory, choose my
download directory, save all.
The rest is open the predefined link, look if there is something new, and if yes mark and copy.
(1 click on the beta firmware + press F5 key)
