Big firmware upgrade?

Randy Moore
Today I'm helping a friend update his K3 firmware. He doesn't have
high speed internet access and it's been over a year since he has
upgraded. Are there any calibrations that need to be done after such a
significant upgrade?  He also hasn't done any of the hardware upgrades.

Tnx es 73,

Randy, KS4l

The following are fairly simple hardware mods (all easy to access on the RF board) which should bring a 1 year old unit up-to-date with current units (excluding the DSP audio upgrade):

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/IF_Output_Buffer_Gain_Mod_Rev_A.pdf
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3_vfo_noise_mod_Rev_C.pdf
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3%20rx%20protection%20mod,%20rev%20B.pdf

All of these are on the RF Board and fairly easy to do.  The first is needed only if he's using IF OUT for a panadapter.  Of course it's not absolutely necessary to do any of these to be compatible with firmware changes (unless he tries to set CONFIG:VCO MD SPI=2 in the second mod above).

You should also do the RF Gain Calibration in the K3 Utility and then recalibrate the S-Meter.  I would recommend these even if you don't do the hardware mods above.
