CQ 160 WW

daleputnam

The certificate from CQ WW 160 2006, just arrived. Thank you all who helped make that contest happen and helped with the 1st place Single Op CW - Wyoming for me. All those folks that heard and worked me. What was fun for me was just running stations. With nothing more than a wire antenna, well... and a vertical. But is wasn't the heavy hitter that I used to have. That is still being repaired, hope to have it back for this fall.
  But really, thanks to everyone.
Oh, and what is the Elecraft tie? It was with a K2 at 5 watts. So, all the folks at Elecraft helped too. Qrp is a blast!!
  Thank you all,

Congratulations Dale!

You have company to the south.  Last week got the certificate for 1st place
QRP in Colorado in CQ 160 CW 2007.  Also with a K2 at 5W with a temporary
stealth inverted L.  They are some radios!   Looking forward to trying the
K3 this year  ;>)

With all due respect, you QRP guys need to be praising the rigs of the people who pulled your 5 watt rig out of the noise.

5 watts is 5 watts, independent of rig.

Re: CQ 160 WW

You are quite right, Brian.

We appreciate the heck out of those who
have invested their time and effort in
exceptional stations, have great operating
skills, and have the patience to stick with us
in poor conditions to complete a QSO.

In good conditions, you probably can't tell a
good QRP station from  a mediocre LP station,
or even an HP station suffering from a momentary
dip in propagation.  That's what makes it so
much fun for us :-)

Our reward comes from putting together a
total system that can make itself heard at
significant distances, especially on 160m.
That's actually a pretty decent challenge
for anyone, as witness the efforts the serious
stations go to at any power level.

To be able to play with the big boys in the
contests, we have to wring every bit of losses
out of our systems, and ensure that every
one of those 5w is paying its way.  Takes a
lot of attention to detail, but again, we enjoy
the challenge.

Good luck and hope to work you in the contests.

You are correct, of course. I run QRP on 160m in the Stew Perry Topband
Challenge, which rewards the stations working the QRP stations with
additional points for putting in the extra receiving effort. In other
160m contests I usually run at least 100w "just to make it fair" (about
2 S-Units stronger signals).

Cheers,
