CW Decode

w2eck
Sorry I know this just came up but here goes again. New K3 rig operator and I can't get CW Decode to work. I have text decode set to CW 5-40 and THR set to Auto. I am in CW mode and have the T showing under and to the right of CW. I am using auto spot to get the signal zero beat. Getting nice loud clear signal but no decode. A few days back the advice was to TAP the DISP button to clear VFO b area and see the decode. When I tap display, it just alternates between vfo b freq readout or the time. So what am I missing here?

Firmware revision?  The latest FW [4.51?] has a problem with CW Decode,
fixes are coming.  Try the earlier FW if CW decode is important to you.
The new version does have some major improvements to the AGC and NR
functions.

With FW 4.51 installed the CW decode has become problematic.  I think
Wayne mentioned that it was primarily an AGC issue.  With this in mind
I've been able to get it to do almost perfect copy of the W1AW slow
speed code practice tonight. My technique is to set the Threshold to
Auto (HOLD CWT}, carefully tune in the signal to be copied using the CWT
marker and then back down on the RF gain until the characters begin to
appear.  You might have to ride the RF gain control to get consistent copy.

I don't know of any way to lock the VFO-B display into "text" mode.

Hope this helps ...

As Wayne posted some time ago, there is no problem with CW decode *IF*
you set the AGC threshold and slope to values that match the pre 4.51
defaults.  I don't remember what the "compatible" values are since I
prefer the improved receiver performance with the new firmware but I
would start with AGC THR between 2 and 5 and AGC SLP between 12 and 15
for best decoder performance (but not best receiver performance).

For grins, I set AGC THR=3 and AGC SLP=13, enabled the CW decoder and
was easily able decode about any CW signal I heard on 30 meters as
long as the sending station was not running his letters together (a
very typical problem - the human brain is better at separating CW
with "short" letter spaces than most decoders.

The issue is that most users tend to operate with 4.51 well below the
AGC threshold and with significant 'non-flat' slope above threshold.
That makes decoding much harder.  The changes will introduce AGC into
the decoding path to restore the more constant audio level into the
decoder.

I actually recommend something slightly higher for AGC THR, say 5 to
7. Then adjust the CW decode threshold so that the CWT icon flashes
along with the incoming CW.

Lyle and I are planning further improvements, in particular making the
CW decode threshold a lot less finicky.

It would be lovely if you could squeeze in a persistent text decode mode for vfo B display, while you are at it. Maybe an additional choice when using DISP?

I for one hope they will offer an option to blank the vfo B freq display
except when tuning.

You can get "persistent" text display easily if you have a computer
connected to your KX3 or K3. There are two methods: (1) use the
Utility program's "terminal" function. (2) Using any type of terminal
application, send the command "TT1;" to the K3 or KX3.

In both cases, all decoded text will then be sent to the computer
screen.

Well, I can get persistent text display with fldigi too, but that was
not quite the point. The text decode goes away from vfo B area too
quickly, so it's difficult to use. At least it is for me, both for CW (I
have no problem admitting I suck at it and I need a decoder) and for the
built in digimodes. I'd love to be able to get on the air with just the
radio and a piece of paper and pencil, for a change.
