I'm looking for a carrying case for my K3. I'd like it to be small
enough that I can take it on an airplane as carry-on luggage. What size Pelican will fit? Any other suggestions? My purchase included the optional 1527 Nylon travel bag. The bag can be removed from the hard case when less demanding transportation protection is adequate. I've used my 1520 case as carry-on luggage and also purchased the TSA-compliant lock. Dennis:
The soft K3 case from Rose Kopp is another option *if* you only intend to place the case under the seat in front of you: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/7058736_hZbo4/1/452236459_Bc3aF#452236459_Bc3aF However, I would likely stick to a hard case if you use overhead airline storage -- too many inconsiderate people who think nothing of jamming their luggage (and crushing the K3) in the overhead compartment, and will do anything to make it fit. The next step is the W0YK version, a bit larger then the standard Kopp
bag with foam inserts and, if I understand correctly, stiffeners. If Rose could make it out of hi-vis orange, then everyone would think it was safety equipment and avoid it. 73, doug From: "Paul Christensen" <[hidden email]> Date: Sat, 15 Aug 2009 13:24:41 -0400 Dennis: The soft K3 case from Rose Kopp is another option *if* you only intend to place the case under the seat in front of you: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/7058736_hZbo4/1/452236459_Bc3aF#452236459_Bc3aF However, I would likely stick to a hard case if you use overhead airline storage -- too many inconsiderate people who think nothing of jamming their luggage (and crushing the K3) in the overhead compartment, and will do anything to make it fit. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The K3 will fit in a Pelican 1510 - about 1/4" of foam on each side, but that should be good enough for carry on - as long as you can keep it in sight or in the overhead. But I would not want baggage handlers anywhere to touch it! And you could probably get a switching power supply in the 1510 with it. The 1520 with a 1527 might be good to check in, but it doesn't look like it has wheels to pull through airports like the 1510 does. A 1527 alone looks like it might be about the same as a Rose Kopp case. I used a Rose Kopp case to take take my K3 to Nicaragua and was fairly apprehensive any time anyone came close to it! It is a very nice case for traveling by car or to Field Day etc but not on an airplane. This winter if I take the K3 again it will go carry on in a 1510 with wheels. 73 Hank K8DD ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Dennis, I was trying to order a Pelican for my K3 from The Case Place (they
have good prices, www.caseplaceusa.com) where I have bought Pelican cases before. The owner advised me to instead buy a Storm Case, since that brand has some advantages and is owned by Pelican. I got a Storm Case iM2400 and am very happy with it. It is extremely similar to my Pelicans, but is easier to open due to a small release button in each latch. 73, Erik K7TV > I'm looking for a carrying case for my K3. Dennis:
I purchased a Pelican 1520 for my K3. Mine came from http://www.foamerica.com/ and was the best price I found for this model ($99.75 + s/h). I positioned my K3 further to one side so I could fit additional items in the case, such as a CW key. 73, Jed AD7KG On Sun, Aug 16, 2009 at 11:16 AM, Erik N Basilier <[hidden email]> wrote: > Dennis, I was trying to order a Pelican for my K3 from The Case Place (they > have good prices, www.caseplaceusa.com) where I have bought Pelican cases > before.
