I'm looking into buying a headset for the eventual arrival of my K3. There
is a regular ad in QST for an outfit in California that looks interesting. It is Warren Gregoire & Associates and I wonder if anyone in the group has any knowledge of how well this unit performs. If the Heil headset is head and shoulders above this one I could wait and get it later but if this one would be adequate I'd consider it now. I use good Sennheiser headphones - I like to listen to the audio from the
radio without additional signal modifications. You don't need the very best - those around the $100 mark are not at all bad, for example even these: http://www.brack.ch/aspx/Shop/lager.aspx?ArtID=63546 Simon Brown, HB9DRV ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nelson Wittstock" <[hidden email]> > I'm looking into buying a headset for the eventual arrival of my K3. > There is a regular ad in QST for an outfit in California that looks > interesting. I alternate between a pair of light, behind the head, "Walkman" style
headphones and a venerable AKG headset. Both give me clear audio. The major limiting factors at present is the amount of noise on both 80 m and 40 m. Headphones won't clear this up, but DSP techniques help. The major differences between the two types of headphone are: The behind the head style is light, allows air to circulate around my ears which is good in the hot weather, and also allows me to hear my wife when she wants something. The AKG are comfortable, has a microphone which will possibly work after I make up an amplifier, have pads which fit over the ear, and so block out extraneous noise and my wife. 73 Kevin VK3DAP / ZL2DAP _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. At our local club and among many of the members of the BCC aviation headsets are
fairly popular. The headsets we have in use locally are the PA11-60 and PA11-61 <http://www.pilot-usa.com/pa1161a.htm>. Advantages: 1) Bandwidth limited to voice frequencies. 2) Microphone can be placed very close to mouth. 3) Microphone not very sensitive to surrounding noise. 4) High level of surrounding noise attenuation. Disadvantages: 1) Weight. 2) Tend to put a fair amount of pressure on the ears. 3) Not very useful for listening to music. 4) Cost (from c. $100 up to ????) vy 73 de toby _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hash: SHA1 I use the Elecraft version of the Heil Proset+ with my K2/100. I would stay away from the Warren Gregoire headset. When I was in the market about 10 years ago for my first headset I gave them a call. They were advertising the same headset as today but in "kit" form. I asked about the kit and was given a 5 minute litany about what I needed to buy to put it together and the possibility of my not having the "skills" to do it. I bought a set of Azden HS-03's which I still use on my TS-520. Any good quality headset made for computer use will work just fine. You
literally can plug-and-play into the jacks on the back of the rig. I hooked up a foot switch and alternate between that and vox with ease using a very inexpensive set of headphones I bought from AllElectronics. I have purchased in total 4 kits from Warren Gregoire for the last 5 years.
Two for myself (I have just worn out one in contests and expeditions) and two for my friends. They are easy to assemble(although they sell ready made headsets as well) and IMHO pretty good quality for the price. I never had any headaches them. I currently use their head set with my K2 as well as with IC765. 73, Igor UA9CDC : : I use the Elecraft version of the Heil Proset+ with my K2/100. : : I would stay away from the Warren Gregoire headset.
