Click or Pop Sound Using Diversity Receive

Tobyp
I am using diversity receive on CW and notice a pop or click  (sounds like a relay ) after sending a word (semi bk-in ).  This does not occur with the AUX ANT disengaged as I am no longer using the second antenna.

My rig is set up to use the second receiver antenna attached to ant port #2 instead of the BNC arrangement for AUX receive.  When I bought this rig used it was set up that way.

I wonder if this may have something to do with it?

Any ideas?

Re: Click or Pop Sound Using Diversity Receive

Tobyp
Just found out the clicking occurs when the KPA 500 is in line.  I do not hear the clicking when unkeying using the rig barefoot,   but only occurs when the amp is turned on and active.  I am using the special K3 to KPA 500 cabling.

This does not occur when not in Diversity mode,   but does occur when in diversity mode on cw.

Hi Toby,

You just confirmed the diagnosis by identifying the problem as only happening while running high power. You are hearing the COR (carrier operated relay) in the K3. See page 37 in the manual. Here is an excerpt.

The sub receiver’s AUX antenna must be well-isolated from the transmit antenna to avoid activating the sub’s carrier-operated relay.

If you can't physically move your receive antenna you should consider an RF Limiter like the ICE 196 or use a relay to remove your receive antenna while transmitting.
