Contest RST reports

If you want an accurate signal report, the place to go is RBN
http://www.reversebeacon.net/main.php

Just Send CQ and wait for the spots to roll in.

Everything else is preamble [contest 599 - for everyone] or overly polite, or a wild guess,
or all of the above.

Why be upset with a 599? Because of that very same variability; it is highly
unlikely that you will have exactly the same propagation to different parts
of the world at the same time, so why should you accept the same report from
all contacts without question?

Skimmer and RBN are many wonderful things, but I'm not sure they are
signal-level "accurate." The signal level Skimmer gives you is SNR.

1. Noise levels will vary among different Skimmers.

2. Noise level will vary over time (both short- and long-term) for an
individual skimmer.

All true, Hank.  You can't get an absolute signal report, particularly
given the wide variation in antenna systems, preamps, and so on.  OTOH,
if you want to compare your signal to a given Skimmer over time, or with
another station, the Signal Comparison Tool on the RBN web site will
give you data that are averaged among multiple spots by a given
Skimmer.  Multiple data points go a long way toward averaging out the
effects of QRM or QRN on the SNR of a particular Skimmer.
