Continuing Serial to (RS232, DB9) to USB Adapter Cable

I am in the same position except I measured it with a multimeter set to
the AC millivolts range (on Gary Surrency's advice) and the software
responds with a one time change of frequency and mode (N3FJP ACLOG). My
question is what in the K2 generates the continuous data stream?

My story is that I think that in a nearby lightning strike, my USB/RS232
adapter was fried. I also found that my Adapter chip on the I/O board
needed replacing. In debugging this condition I destroyed the MCU
(grugh). That's now replaced and I'm at this one shot condition. I
replaced my damaged adapter, that was working, with the same make (from
Buxcomm). That works to extent  that it passes on the one shot data. Any
ideas?
