Re: DIY DSP Rev D

Good grief guys.  Look at the shipping status on these. "Due to the high rate of orders for this item, and the slow rate of return of the exchange DSPs, new K3DSPUPGD orders take 2-4 weeks to ship".

it would appear that Elecraft is reworking returned boards to "D" level.  That seems perfectly rational.  Why would they take your returned Rev B board and just shred it,when there are just a small number of component changes and the addition of a daughter board?

I'm sure the D board you get from Elecraft will be "perfect" in all respects.  Most likely the C board I got from Elecraft was reworked.  Haven't lost any sleep.  Reworking a board like this, especially for simple component changes (simple if you know what you're doing and have the right tools, that is!)  is common industry practice.

This is exactly what we are doing for the DSP upgrade. They are fully
tested and have a full warranty too.

My issue is that I've already added a LPF daughter card and I've already
done a modification for low frequency extension.  However Eric has
mentioned that there are further enhancements beyond just these two
things in one of his emails.  Eric said in a previous email "There are a
number of changes outside of the DSPLPF, and the low freq value
changes".

I'd just like to know what the changes are so that I can do the rework
myself.  Barring being told what the rework is (if Elecraft wants to
keep that secret) then I'd like to know what I should expect when I
install this improved board.

Heck depending on what the price of a DSP board is I'd be willing to
sign something saying that if I break my board I'm willing to send in
the broken board and pay full price for a new one if Elecraft would send
me the rework instructions.  I'm sure there are a set of instructions
being used by the techs reworking the boards.

Hi Brett - I apologize for any confusion on this issue.

The changes on the K3DSP Upgrade are just for low freq RX -and- TX
response and the LPF above 4 kHz. You are probably covered.

My main concern was that some had done only RX -or- TX mods on their
own. Some only have modified the RX path, some only the speaker path,
but not other paths etc. Just adding the LPF would have left them with a
different board than the DSP Upgrade board. Also, its really impossible
for us to support boards modified in a non-standard manner since we
don't know what the user has changed. Hence my recommendation for most
to go the DSPUPGD board route.

Somewhere either on this list or the elecraft site or ?? I read that
the boards were shipping up to 4 to 6 weeks late because of the
slow return of the old ones for rework.
So yes it appears your getting a reworked board from someones
return.
So I would assume you could get serial number 20 board for
your number 3000 radio?   If wrong would appreciate being
corrected.
Mine has been on order for about 5 weeks or so now.

Re: DIY DSP Rev D

Hi Merv

I wonder what  the price of purchasing a new current production board outright would be without the returning the old board?

Elecraft must be producing these new boards now for new K3's If someone is willing to bin the board and buy a new one outright, this  could be way out for those wanting one quickly.

Merv,

I don't understand that logic.  See Eric's post from 9:08 PM EST today.
What is wrong with getting a fully updated DSP board with a full
warranty to put into your SN 3000 K3.  Who cares what the serial number
of the K3 that board came from, it is a *new* board after it has been
upgraded and fully tested - there is no difference.  The board PC traces
and the solder do not wear out.

If yours has been on order for 5 weeks, it should arrive soon.

Re: DIY DSP Rev D

Mike Cox
I guess another option could be to take your old board out of the radio
and send it to Elecraft for a factory update and wait for it's return.
Of course this would render the radio inoperable for that period of time
but at least you would know that your "serial number vintage DSP board"
matched your serial numbered radio. I think the current board swap
program makes a lot of sense but maybe that's just me.
