Dead Sub Rcvr

WE5ST
Could use some more troubleshooting help. I'm hoping to find a cable left
disconnected but doubt it. Any tips on where to look greatly appreciated!

I added a few mods to my K3 last Friday & just getting around to running through
all the features - shake down cruse. I find the sub receiver, which was working
fine before is now silent expect for some odd spaced spurs in a couple of spots.
It's the same on all bands checked. All else seems to be working well including
the added components.

I had to pull the sub receiver while installng an AM filter in the main
receiver, the KXV3 I/O module, KDVR3 recorder module, DSP board upgrade and
installed KTCX03-1 temp controlled xtal oscillator.

I will open the case again tomorrow when I'm fresh and have time to go over my
work carefully.

Wish me luck and again, thanks for any advice.

Re: "No longer" Dead Sub Rcvr

WE5ST
I hate when this happens - sort of.
After tearing the K3 down I pulled the sub receiver and double checked
everything. While at it I decided to move the filter locations in the sub to
match the main receiver. I didn't bother to do that last week. Main has 6khz
installed, sub does not - so the sub now has a blank in the second slot with all
others matching.
Reinstalled everything, triple checking and reading instructions over and over.
Once installed, same symptoms. Really frustrating.
Put a call into the mother ship (Elecraft tech support) and while waiting for
the return call, pulled up the K3 Utility and reset the filter locations in the
menu. Voila! Sub receiver now works like new.
Not complaining but running the utility and ONLY resetting the filter locations
should not have fixed anything, IMO. And maybe it didn't - that's the rub.

Thanks for the responses, I checked all the tips and appreciate the combined
expertise this list always offers up.

Jack,

Check the antenna connection - a small coax cable connector - at the rear of the
2nd receiver.  If that's OK, be sure you have assigned a useable antenna to the
2nd receiver.

Re: "No longer" Dead Sub Rcvr

Guy, K2AV
You cannot move the filters around without setting them up with the
utility.  Technically, you CAN do this with the menu, but this is so
protracted and klunky as to be a guaranteed mistake maker.  It is possible
to do something totally wierd with the filters using the menu system.
Putting data edit functions in the firmware is a pain and uses up precious
resources.  Use the utility.

If you move the filters, bring up the utility and do the filter settings.
 Everytime.  Check ALL the settings.

My sub Receiver is DEAF lately; what could be the problem?

NH7RO
I am having a similar problem with my K3 sub-receiver; my sub-receiver is not dead but the signal levels are way down---much more so than they should be.

I noticed this the other day when operating split; I could barely hear the stations calling the dx unless i hit the REV button.

I recently ran the latest K3 Utility and fixed the dsp error messages that I was having as well as double-checking (and correcting) the filter settings.

I still have greatly reduced signals on the sub receiver.  This is not an audio issue as the background hiss sounds as it should when I turn up the audio level.

I have a day off tomorrow so I'll call elecraft support then;in the meantime does anyone have any good ideas what the problem could be?

I've been playing around with all the antenna inputs, filter settings, BSET settings, RX ANT settings, SUB settings to no avail or change.

Re: My sub Receiver is DEAF lately; what could be the problem?

Dick Dievendorff
It's often an antenna setting problem:  ANT2 versus ANT1, aux bnc versus
transmit antenna, BSET Rx ANT, etc.

Another possibility is that a TMP cable isn't seated correctly.  K3support
may have more ideas.

Re: My sub Receiver is DEAF lately; what could be the problem?

NH7RO
I'm been in touch with Elecraft and it sounds like it may be a PIN diode in the KIO3 board might have gotten overloaded.

I opened up the case and checked and tweaked the TMP connections and so far I'm not sure whether or not that made a difference---the bands are pretty quiet now so I don't have a lot to go by (no test equipment other than my ears).

Will be back here as soon as I can determine what's going on but it may require a trip to Aptos for my K3.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Re: My sub Receiver is DEAF lately; what could be the problem?

NH7RO
About the same time I posted this here I got an email from Gary at Elecraft with a list of things to try under the hood of my K3.

I finally had enough time today after a busy work week to get to the testing.  Everything except one of tests checked out OK.

The one thing that didn't was when I touched a probe to the white trimmer cap at the back of the KRX3 (C218) I heard nothing---when I should have heard a lot of noise.   So, assuming that may be the reason (or at least a subdstantial clue) why my sub-receiver is comparitively deaf these days; what say anyone else on this?

It'll probably be sometime next week before I hear back from Gary as I don't think he'll be at work over the weekend---so I thought I'd query the forum in the meantime.

Re: My sub Receiver is DEAF lately; what could be the problem?

NH7RO
Update;

Am sending in the KRX3, SUB IN board, and possibly the KIO3 board today or tomorrow to Elecraft; hopefully they'll find the problem somewhere therein and I won't have to send the whole rig to them (very costly from KH6 with insurance and all).

Thanks for the help offered in this forum but I'll leave it to the great guys at Elecraft now.

73,  Jeff  (Will set up my Icom 746 with the KPA500 while the K3 is temporarily out of service)
