Delay in RF/Audio output on my K3

redtarga4
I've started to notice when I first turn on my K3/100 (#6131). there appears to be a delay in reaching full RF output. I start calling a station and notice almost no RF or audio but after a minute or so, the power is full scale and the Audio level is working fine. Any suggestion why this may be happening?? I have several microphones and it happens with all of them. It does not happen on CW.. Just SSB.

Thanks in advance..

Re: Delay in RF/Audio output on my K3

This was one of the things that used to always annoy me about my K3 until;

I set it up for 15v with a heavy duty cable to replace the factory supply
cable.

Now I get full power at instant on turn on, all day long.

I think it is the current sensor knocking back the power until things settle
down, but at a stiff 15v
everything plays nice. I never see high current warnings like I used to
either.

The 15v HD cable setup I implemented fixed every aspect of K3 problems I did
not like.

Re: Delay in RF/Audio output on my K3

Gary, Yep he should try a RF cal, I did it many, many, many many times just
like the guy in Police Academy.

It came good and then would come and go being an issue at random moments,
and I lived with it until I

came across the 15v idea and then no more. I noticed all of a sudden how
op's kept qrg just 1 to 2 kc away

from me as they could not hear my signal, i.e, much narrower now.

I run 2.2kc audio bandwidth and sounds good on the CM500 doesn't it Gary?

TxEq    50,100 & 3.2k all at -16.   The rest:  200= +2    400 = +4    800 =
+6   1.6k = +6  2.4k = +4

These are the magic vk4tux cm-500 audio settings as above.

I used 10mm here,  about 16" long. Sw/mde pwr supply sits neat & close on
the P3.

What is your K3 display volts at 110w keydown Gary? I think it is impossible
to do better than 0.4v voltdrop

fully loaded. My range is from 15.2 to 14.8, A guy I worked in Hawaii was
very interested in what I was doing

when he had a close look at my signal at close span on his P3, and was going
to set his K3 up the same way.

Cheers

Adrian

Adrian,

In his case he still needs to do an RF CAL (which I told him to do). I also
replaced my power cable to 6mm and used the 40amp Power pole spades and I
use 14.1V from the powerwerx and a lead that is only 12 inches long.

No issues for years mate..:-)

Re: Delay in RF/Audio output on my K3

vk4tux
Well yes I see 0.2v drop at 100w too, but going to 110w makes quite a
difference and takes a lot more weeties.

It looks like the powerwerx has v-good regulation.

Now I have the wunderbar P3SVGA I get a grand panoramic view of im3 spikes
on signals and the like, in technicolour splashes of red

and other overdriven colours(<spelt in Australia).

The FK's seem very good at it and quite a few locals as you say.  Can you
crank your powerwerx to 15v Gary?, for

then you will be at 1(one) with the K3.

May the power be with you.

Adrian,

My settings are now VK4TUX...do I get an award or certificate for that...:-)

My voltage drop is now 0.2V at key down with 100W

I m getting unsolicited good reports now and breaking through in most cases
so all is good.

Whar is wrong with VK's and their rubbish audio...are we the ONLY ones who
care mate?

just today for example I listend to a VK with an FT-990 and it was dreadful,
a ZL1 was almost as bad and VK4LJ was so wide he was taking up 20Kc's of BW
until turned off the DX2, man what a terrible signal.

but what can you do, if you try to let them know their is an issue you get
abuse and called an RF Police. Gone are the days when we all cared about the
quality of the signal it seems. Oh well, I just change bands and find better
signals on 10 and 15M.

Of course then you start hearing roger beeps and other weird sounds coming
out of the CB-Ham ops...:-(

Sigh!.....I will get down from my soapbox now and look for the door to my
hole...

Oh, while I am at it, don't you love the VK's who tune up over your qso
before you go clear and leave the frequency?....chuckle..the joys of DXing
in VK mate.

73's, and will listen out for you and give you a shout BUT I don't like to
jump in when your trying to work DX so it may take me a bit before I call in
OK?
