Desk Mic selection

Bill W
I am looking for a desk mic for my K3 and I have had a couple of folks suggest the ATR1300 dynamic mic. It is more along the lines of studio mic but what I have heard on the air I like.  Just checking here to see of there are any other recommendations.
Thanks,
Bill - W0BBI

With the flexibility of the K3 regarding mic levels, bias, front or rear
panel connections and TX equalization, just about ANY microphone can be made
to sound quite nice. (They can also me made to sound horrible, through
improper adjustment).

I get many unsolicited "nice audio" reports using my older Icom SM-8 desk
microphone.

I have the TenTec 707 and like it. I did have to turn a washer around to keep the head swivel from swiveling.

The ATR-1300 is a competent utility grade microphone.  For $30 or
less from multiple vendors, it is hard to go wrong.  However, you will
also need a base and PTT switch along with some work to make cables,
etc.

By the time you get a base, etc, you will probably spend more for the
base, than the ATR-1300 ... with a total cost comparable to buying a
Kenwood MC60A and significantly more than an MFJ-297 plus the Kenwood
cable (both of which are plug-and-play solutions).

Re: Desk Mic selection

I pressed my 40 year old Shure 444D into service with my K3. Cosmetically,
it goes very well with the K3.
On-the-air reports, the locals on I chew with on 75 says it sounds just
fine. I used the stock settings in the K3. Someday I will try tweaking the
settings.

I've tried my old 444D too and like the sound of it with no TX EQ.

Yes, the Shure 444, in all of its variations, is a great-sounding ham
mic, very well built.  If I wanted a desk mic for my rig(s) it would be
my first choice.

Wow!  Thanks for the all the feedback concerning desk mic's. Apparently there are more potential options than I
thought. I appreciate all the feedback.

Bill - W0BBi
P.S. To all the Veterans out there, thanks for your service.
