I find even the lowest level (1 -1) on the noise reduction is too
aggressive especially with weak signals. You can learn to love digital noise reduction, I had an NIR 10 and used judiciously was very helpful. This morning trying to work a station in Senegal 6W2SC, I wished the NR was a little less or more adjustable. Maybe a future software upgrade. I think the same about NR.
It is great in CW, but a little "aggressive" with SSB. My K3 is only 1 month old, is possible after more time i like it also on ssb. Have you tried F5-1?
Remember that there are two completely different sets of NR settings. 1-1 through 4-4 use a different algorithm than 5-1 through 8-4. You might find that you prefer one set over the other. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Feb 15, 2010, at 1:42 PM, Richard Thorpe wrote: > I find even the lowest level (1 -1) on the noise reduction is too > aggressive especially with weak signals. Richard, I agree with you. The NR is still not quite up to snuff, at least my mind. It is my one ongoing pet peeve. I think it is too aggressive for the lowest settings too. I still favor the way Icon does it with a continuous variable control starting out with little NR and increasing without gong through banks of settings. Maybe in theory the banks work and are helpful. But in a contest I favor the Icom method. I don't think I have been able yet to turn on the NR to pull out a weak one better than listening without it on. Maybe someday? 73, N2TK, Tony #311 #1435 -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Richard Thorpe Sent: Monday, February 15, 2010 4:43 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] Digital Noise Reduction I find even the lowest level (1 -1) on the noise reduction is too aggressive especially with weak signals. I'm not sure if you're using SSB or CW, but I have to completely and utterly disagree with you both on this. The NR for CW, in MY opinion is NOT aggressive enough. Back around Firmware Version 2.22 (before they really started messing with the NR) it used to work VERY VERY Well, almost like a noise gate. It was instant (going from one setting to the other had NO filter build up time), and it wouldn't cause the audio to drop out when you adjusted the Width control in a QSO. (That just drives me Freaking BATTY!) Lyle told me that he wasn't able to go back to the way it used to be Circa late 2008, why I'm not exactly sure, but that being the case, I have to say that 1-1, 1-3, and some times 2-3 work fairly well for me.. even though they're not what they used to be. Now, if you're talking about SSB, I would appreciate that you play around with the 5-1 through 8-4 adjustments and kindly leave my hardly working 1-1 through 4-4 (cw mode) NR filters as they are... well, that is, unless Lyle can figure out how to get it back to the way it used to be! > From: [hidden email] > To: [hidden email] > Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 18:14:22 -0500 > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Digital Noise Reduction > > > Richard, I agree with you.
