Digital on the K3S

w3pnm
I'm new to Elecraft and was wondering how most of you handle digital communications.

Use the K3 Utility program for digital modes or something like SignalLink USB with fldigi or equivalent?

Just like any other good radio -- I use a good quality USB audio
interface between the computer and the Line In and Line Out connectors
on the back panel of the radio. I use AFSK for RTTY, and the Digital A
setting for all other modes. For RTTY, I use MMTTY and 2Tone with
WinWarbler for every day operation, and with N1MM Plus for contesting. I
use WSJT-X for the modes it supports, WSJT for the other JT modes. I
don't work other digital modes.

SignaLink USB is a pretty poor quality product, and it's WAY out of
date. Here are recommendations for some good ones, all of which are
cheaper. :) http://k9yc.com/USB_Interfaces.pdf

Sorry, I missed that this is for a K3S.  You don't need any outboard
audio interface, use the one built into the K3S.

Forgot to mention that I use VOX for all digital modes.

Digital with the K3  is much like with other rigs but with a few
differences

Im not sure if you have a K3 or K3s   but neither need a signal link
but they can be used.   the K3s has a built in sound adapter that can
is used through the USB port.   with an older K3 you can use any sound
adapter including the one built into most computers and connect it to
the line in and out on the rear of the K3, it has internal isolation
so this function of a  signallink is not really needed.

For software you can use what ever you chose  be it FLdigi HRD or
MMvari or whatever you prefer.   setup is a little different regarding
driving the rig.   with most rigs you want to drive it with no ALC
meter deflection.  with the K3 however it should be with the fourth
bar showing and flickering the fifth bar.     you then adjust your
output power with the power adjustment.   runining digital with a K3
it is possible to run much more power out than with most conventional
rigs.      this setup makes the K3 in my opinion a fantastic rig for
digital modes.

there are alot of fine points using the different digital settings on
the rig. so the manual will be a must  if not Fred Caddy's book.
which is highly recommended.

The K3S has a built in sound card... via the USB connection.  You can
download the manual for the K3S here and read about the USB interface and
sound card: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3S%20Owner's%20man%20A1.pdf

Here is the review from the ARRL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=wMy3f52sSvo

If the Elecraft user manual isn't enough and you are close to pulling the
trigger on a K3S, you might want to spend $45 on "The Elecraft K3S & P3" by
Fred Cady" (on the order page)  Well worth the investment.

At the end of the day, you don't need an external sound card, but you can
use one if you want to... then pair it up with the software of your choice,
fldigi, dxlab, mmtty, etc... etc...  Google, google, google... the sky is
the limit on the information you will find. YouTube etc...

Wow that ARRL review on the K3S was terrible (and I'm being generous)...
sorry I even put a link in for it.  There must be a better video review out
there.  Sorry.

Bill,
You ask a very good question. You could use a SignaLink with FLDIGI.
But, why do it that way as Elecraft made the option OBE. You have,
essentially, a built in SignaLink. It will show up in the sound card
list for FLDIGI. I did this for the last RTTY contest, and it worked out
very well.

George,

I have to say all the ARRL QST "video reviews" are terrible. So dumbed down, Bob telling you where the antenna socket is, and that kind of thing. Of no earthly use. I really don't know why they bother, I have never learned a thing from any of them.
