I'm sure I speak for many, and I would be very interested in a K3 if it has a
general coverage receiver. That's the main reason I can't seriously consider a K2 to meet my needs. I do a LOT of listening - far more than operating. So a compact mobile transceiver MUST have a general coverage receiver to be of interest to me. As far as price goes, you need to consider that the Kenwood TS-480SAT has all the features the K2 has, PLUS general coverage receive, PLUS 6M. It also comes standards with the remoteable control head. And it's available right now for less than 1 kilobuck. 73, Jim KM5M --------------------- We don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing. And when it fails, good luck fixing it yourself! 8-)
And how about that terrible receiver front end? If I believe the ample info available from the ham community, the
Kenwood, while offering a lot of polish, is lacking in what I'd call essential performance. At the core, it's receiver does not do as well as the K2 (or K3 presumably) at handling the dynamics of the current HF bands and doesn't do as well at producing clean, pleasing audio. In exchange for giving up that basic solid receiver performance, you get a lot more features that allow the rig to do things the K2 cannot. Of course, that does not negate the validity of your point. Yes, the Asian rigs do offer features not available from Elecraft and to many hams, their eye-candy appeal is too good to pass up, provided you can check your critical ear and high standards at the door. 73 Jim & all! - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - -----Original Message----- ... I can't imagine how many days or weeks of time and cost of shipping, labor, and
parts the same damage on a Kenwood 480 would be. So basically you have a slick case along with a number of knobs and features to
manipulate fascets of an inferior receiver? I guess this is how you sell an appliance that is inferior in performance. Even if the argument is that the K2 is inferior in aesthetics, mounting, and features, how much of what is "inferior " is not compensatable by your hands and your brain (eg. IF shift = BFO shift + VFO shift)? I know where I am spending my money (when I finish saving it up). Is it my immagination or does anyone else feel like they are a kid saving their paper route money for, well, a really cool radio?
