Dunstar Question

wn3r.us
Current configuration: K3 ---> Dunstar ---> Alpha 87A

New configuration: K3 ---> Dunstar ---> KPA 500 ---> KAT500

Question: How do I control the the band switching on the Dunstar? Is
there a way to parallel the Dunstar from the K3 Acc? If not, which is
better? Disconnect the Amp Aux or the Tuner Aux?

This is an SO2R station. Second station is: K3---> Dunstar ---> ACOM 2000A

Re: Dunstar Question

Dick Dievendorff
If your K3 is now providing band data to your Dunestar, it probably is using
a band decoder from the four BAND lines on the K3 ACC connector.

The Elecraft KPAK3AUX cable set
(http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KPAK3AUX%20Cable%20Set%20Instructions.pdf)
includes a Y connector that enables you to connect the KAT500/KPA500 as well
as another device (your existing band decoder) to the K3's back panel ACC
connector.

Be careful when selecting a Y connector; some sold for VGA monitors may not
have all 15 pins connected as you would expect.

Re: Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

wn3r.us
Thanks, Dick.

Dummy me opened the tuner first and posted my question after reading its
manual.  Had I opened the AMP box first, I would have had my answer as I
found the Y cable. Perhaps,
there should a mention of the Y cable in the Tuner manual as well.

Thanks again for your help. My plan is to remote the whole thing with
the K3/0 which is still in the box.  I have some work to do on my old
Remote Rig boxes that are now connected to the IC-706.

Re: Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

Joe Subich, W4TV-4

Dick,

The Y connector directly parallels the BCD lines of the KPA-500 and
whatever device is connected to the other leg of the Y.  In some
cases, one device can load the lines such that the other device does
not decode reliably.  Check your Dunestar (and any decoder used to
control the Dunestar - from memory the Dunestar 600 is "one line per
band" and not BCD) for proper operation when connected in parallel
with the KPA-500.

Your memory is good -- it's one line per band, not BCD. Schematic in the
Dunestar manual shows pin-out for the DB9.

I don't think the dune star uses bcd signals.  It needs outputs from a
relay driver to select the appropriate filter.  It can be set to either
sink or source.

Re: Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

Jack Brindle-2
The Elecraft KRC2 does a great of providing the control signals for the Dunestar filters. Just connect it to the K3's AUX IO connector, then the Dunestar inputs to the appropriate KRC2 terminal outputs and you will get automatic band pass filter switching.

As do the microHAM Station Master and the original "Band Decoder" if
you find one of them on the used market.

Re: Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

Greg - AB7R
I've used both and both are very good.  What I really like about the
Stationmaster is it will handle just about any switching requirement
you can need and provide band switching for an amplifier as well.  And
you don't need to mess with jumpers for multiband antennas or if you
happen to change what port the antennas are on.  Simply change it in
the router software and load it to the eeprom and you're good to go.
And you can set multiple antennas per band and use a simple PS2 number
pad to change between them.
