SOUNDS LIKE BAD COAX CONNECTOR TO ME.  IVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN PAST AND NEW COAX AND CONNECTORS SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR ME.  73 STEVE

Speaking of this, I bought some jumpers recently, and I noticed the PL259 plugs slipped into the SO239 socket too freely, as if no contact.  

Rather then bend the pins on the socket, I applied a little solder to the plug's center conductor and then filed the solder down until it slid into the socket with some friction.  I have no doubts now.

You have solved a problem in the short term, but I fear you've created a
plug that can potentially damage any other socket(s) it gets plugged
into in the future. Might have been wiser to repair or replace the
defective socket.
