Hello all,
Well we're only two days away from the EPA QRP Club Polar Bear March Madness Event! To date we have seven Pulpit Rock, PA Polar Bears, four Iowa Polar Bears, one PA Polar Bear, one VA Polar Bear and one GA Polar Bear. That's a total of 14 Polar Bear Ops for this Friday's event. Weather here in PA should be rain, but we all still will head up to the "rock" to operate as Pulpit Rock Polar Bears on the AT. Remember, if you work a Polar Bear, you can grab a beautiful Polar Bear Certificate. WB3AAL and myself (WA3WSJ) will hike up the mountain in the rain and then set up tents to operate in to keep dry. We'll do the hard part, but we need you to make contacts! Take a look at the Polar Bear Web site by clicking on the link below. http://www.wa3wsj.com/files/PolarBear2005.html 72, Ed, WA3WSJ Polar Bear #1 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Was "baptized" tonight with a QSO from Allentown, PA to Clearview, FL
with K4IBZ on about 7034.3 kHz. Thanks, Bill! Signal was strong and in the clear just after midnight east coast time. Bill was definitely 599 here and he gave me a 589 while I was running 5 W (I know, it is overkill). Why was I on 7.034 instead of 7.040? Well, I've been rockbound there with my SmallWonderLabs RockMite (RM-40) for the past year now, so it was refreshing to tune around and be able to call somebody who was just finishing up a QSO and started calling CQ rather than waiting for somebody to wonder around to 7.040 or answer my CQ there. Don't worry, I'll be back often, it has a special fondness in my heart, although I'll be wondering around a bit now too elsewhere on 40m (and 80 and 30 and 20 ...). Had a frustrating night doing frequency calibration & filter CAL FIL setup and alignment. Not sure why it was so frustrating. C22 didn't seem to adjust the frequency display as I thought it would, but eventually I think I got things tuned in on frequency, at least for now they are within about 0.2 kHz, which is off a heck of a lot more than I would like, but it is closer than it was. When I put a new L31 in to get more PLL range (my 10 uH only gave me 9.1 kHz) I'll have to spend more time with it then. In the meantime I'll have fun playing, and building the other modules that will be going in soon.. I may take the rig along for the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness event on Friday with the EPA QRP Club and use it instead of the FT-100 mobile rig. Check out: http://www.wa3wsj.com/files/PolarBear2005.html for more info on Friday's event. See if you can work me with my new K2! Of course this means I'll be doing more on CW instead of phone.
