Good Evening,
Our record setting heat wave has finally come to an end. Since it is rare to have such heat here in Oregon very few people have air conditioning. Luckily heat like we had only lasts at most a week and then it is gone again. I am glad I can get some sleep now. For four nights it was nearly impossible to get any rest due to the still, hot air. Normally it is in the mid fifties to low sixties overnight but this last week the nighttime temperatures were in the low eighties! However I was starting to acclimatize and the present ninety degree temperatures are pleasant.
A new wave of birds have started to pass through. This may be due to the latest berry to ripen. I am out feasting on my fair share of thimbleberries but the salmon berries are gone. Some the blackberries will be ready; a few already are. The hot weather feels much better when you can eat thimbleberries! I think this is the only species of the Rubus genus which has no thorns. That makes it very nice digging through the clump for the last ripe berry in the middle. Blackberries are not nearly as forgiving!
Propagation was better this week than it had been in quite some time. I have not heard of a strong solar wind nor a sunspot so something else is occuring. I did read of some good sporadic E openings on 6 meters though. Hopefully this will hold until tomorrow and I will make sure not to turn down the power output on the rig. I will be trying from both antennas tomorrow so you may hear my level jump up and down sporadically. This is me switching from a flat top doublet to a shorter doublet in an inverted V configuration. The V is more omnidirectional but the flat top is higher and favors E-W contacts. But, since it is a G5RV it has some interesting lobes on 20 meters.
Please join us tomorrow evening.
