Good Morning,
Here, near Portland, Oregon, we are under a heat advisory. During that period Kevin was out working on his woodpile. Think of it as a cheap sauna :) I processed three liters of water and went through four t-shirts. It was not as hot as they predicted but, then, I did not look at a thermometer either. I simply worked in the shade when possible and limited my strenuous activities in the sunny areas. I did listen on 40 meters a few times this week as I went to bed. My ATS-3 sits on my nightstand so I can listen to CW as I read. 40 meters works with my wire vertical very well so I hear a few regular stations. They like to chat, I like to listen. Thus, I know the band is working into the Midwest because one of them is from the Chicago area. I don't know how much power he is running but he has never responded to my 4 watt signal. Oh well, I'd just as soon listen anyway ;) Looks like I will be running ECN from a park in Hillsboro one Sunday in September. I'll need to find an external speaker for the audience since I like to use headphones to hear down to the noise. I may require more relay stations and more volunteers to act as NCS since I'll be within a city with all of its noisy wiring and industrial equipment. Not like here where the noise floor is S1 at the very worst. Often there is no noise whatsoever. But, I have lived in the city and know how bad it can get. Therefore I'll make sure to ask you all to help when the time comes. The organizer has arranged for a CW interpreter to follow along and explain to the masses what in the world Kevin is up to :) It should be fun if not a bit challenging. One more convert will make the effort a success. Even if I simply inform them of who I am working, from where, and how much power each of you are using I think I'll get some of the skeptics thinking about the mode. Tomorrow I expect temperatures of 95 degrees a few hours before the first net. The radio shack should top out around 90 degrees or so. I'll dig out another fan so I can at least have the benefit of evaporative cooling. The papers will get blown around but I'll find enough paper weights to assist me in keeping the majority in their places. I hope you all are well and ready to get on the air. I found a sweatshirt very useful until about noon. Good news is that we found an HP TIMS unit for $10 at an antique shop between Banks and Manning. Also found a large amount of RG-214 for $40, and a 40' fiberglass mast kit in 4 sections with bag for $15. Shop was run by a ham. Also saw an S-38C in another shop. That was hard to pass up but our rule is, "If you can't figure out where you'll put it before you buy it, you can't buy it." CU all next weekend. Will miss the net today (cruise on the Willamette). This retired life is sooo tough! Welcome to the micro-climates of the Pacific Northwest Coast! Come inland to the Willamette Valeey where Portland is and get a different micro-climate. Today was brutally hot - I'm staying inside where the a/cgoes full time.
