Good Evening,
I got up early this morning so I could work our November SET with the ARES group. I had fun with the folks at the county EOC. I asked the EC what my job was to be and he stated, "You're the supervisor." So I got to boss the EC a little and facilitate comms with our neighboring counties on UHF, VHF, HF, packet, and SSTV. I also learned to have fun while jumping between responsibilities. Some how or another I also landed the most paperwork ;) However, the SET was about an emergency power outage. This may soon be true in our area. We've been having a lot of rain lately with little respite. Today it was light but currently the rain has begun to gain intensity. Tomorrow we are supposed to get quite a bit of it. By 4 PM PST we are to have winds gusting to 60 mph or better. Unfortunately Ms. Pat's land has been completely circumscribed by clearcuts. Wet ground and high winds are a recipe for Douglas fir falling like ten pins. Our land was also thinned so the trees are not yet used to their freedom. If you are not familiar with forestry Doug fir do not have very deep, nor wide spread roots. They are quite prone to being blown over if they are not surrounded by their childhood friends. Ours' are prone for some wind damage. I will be on the air as long as possible tomorrow evening. I may need to work from batteries if I lose commercial power. But, if trees start falling around me I'll be gone quite quickly. If I go QRT do not expect me back in short order since I may have lost one of the major trees which surround the house. The rest of the property is OK because they'll not fall on the house nor block the main road. With any luck the temperature will drop below freezing. Then I can enjoy a large amount of snow which may slow the winds. If all goes well we can enjoy the great propagation I experienced on Friday. I had to keep turning down the gain on my K2 when I was working on twenty meters. I was wearing my headphones in front of my ears but it simply kept growing louder as we went along. Hopefully the solar wind also helped forty meters. I know eighty was doing well for us during the SET since we worked well over a dozen counties. With any luck we shall have two great nets tomorrow afternoon and evening. Please keep your fingers crossed.
