Good Evening,
The weather here in the Pacific Northwest is a little chilly this
weekend. The snow is very dry for a change. The other morning it
actually squeaked on the way to my vehicle. No, it is not the same squeak
you get when it is 40 below zero but it was nice to hear the sound. It
brought back pleasant (?) memories of my early morning Calculus class as I
squeaked through the wind and snow off Lake Mendota on my way to Van
Vleck. The wood pile was also a good measure of the temperature. I had
to beat on it to loosen the grasp of the frost which arose between the
blocks of wood.
Since I had a very busy week at work, which entails three hours of
commute time, I have not been on the air at all. I know there is a solar
stream on the way; due to strike the ionosphere on the 16th. I've kept
track of the news of the comet but our weather did not allow me to see
it. One morning on the way to work I was driving down the mountain, the
sky was clear, and the sun had not yet risen when I tried to see Comet
McNaught. Trouble is the mountain was in the way at all turns. I have
since read about seeing it during the middle of the day by blocking the
sun and seeking the comet about a degree away from it.
Hopefully we can get together tomorrow and do as well or better than we
did last week. There was a bit of digging involved but we had fun. One
of these days the season will turn plus the solar cycle will start upward
again. There is debate about whether we are at or past the bottom of the
cycle. I will wait until we are most assuredly on the up cycle to read
back in time to where the bottom truly laid.
