Elecraft K2 Internal Bluetooth Interface Integration Addon

J-F VA2SS
Hi,

I finally did another project on my K2 #4130. I was tired of using a serial cable for just basic control of my K2 with Hamradio Deluxe.

I integrated an internal bluetooth interface bound to the KIO2. So, I am still able to use the KIO2 as usual OR via bluetooth connection with my CF-30 laptop. Since I don't have the internal battery installed in my K2, I used the ON/OFF switch for other purpose..... to activate or desactivate the internal bluetooth feature inside my K2. So if I don't need the bluetooth interface and want to save about 50-70 mA.... I have just to turn to OFF position and that's it !!

The interface is powered from the 5V line on the control board. That way, I can still monitor how current it takes by switching ON and OFF the interface and look at the K2 internal meter display.

This interface is fully compatible with all software... including Hamradio Deluxe.

A good thing also is Windows recognize the interface as a «remote control» interface using serial protocol...... And I also include my own brand and name inside interface firmware. Windows always see this piece of hardware..... «ELECRAFT K2 SN:4130» !!!!

If you want to take a sneek peek at my pictures.... just click the link below....

The integration was very straight foward. And you do not loose nothing, even the external DB9 connector... can't use serial protocol on both at the same time for sure, that's logical.... but can use the DB9 with the control cable for the KPA100 and the bluetooth for the remote control at the same time.

Another clumsy project from me....

Any comment are welcome.

See you at Dayton !!!!

Hey, not clumsy at all!  That's very classy, and I'd like to duplicate
what you did.  I've worked with Bluetooth interfaces before.  Could
you tell me more about what you did?  Specifically, what model Socket
card did you use, where you pulled off the serial (I assume TTL-level)
RS-232 data, and what mods you did to the firmware?

Maybe you could do a write-up on this beyond just the flickr pictures
if you have the time?

Very well done!

Re: Elecraft K2 Internal Bluetooth Interface Integration Addon

Hi Dave,

Thank for the interest !!

L used a serial bluetooth adapter from SocketCom

Here is the product information:

http://www.socketmobile.com/products/device-connectivity/cordless-serial-adapter/default.asp?page=Specifications

It comes with a configuration software that let you choose all settings: speed, mode, security and even the manufactuer and class of the device that Windows will upon detection.

I opened up the plastic case to remove the tiny board. I also removed (unsoldered) the DC and DB9 connector to make it more tiny.

I just connect the 3 wires used for send, receive and ground, directly to the db9 of the KIO2.
I powered the interface from the 5A line on the control board and use the battery switch (not in use) to let me choose between ON or OFF state.

That way, you are able to continue to use your DB9 for remote daisy chain with other Elecraft product... like KPA100 because it does not use other DB9 pins. And if you turn off the interface, you can continue to use the KIO2 as usual using Elecraft serial cable.

Thats it !!!

A 2 hours project that give more flexibility to the K2 on remote operation.

Please note the you could hear a very small faint electronic noise when NO volume is applied.... seems to be a normal behavior..... but with minimal volume, you even don't hear that noise.... And it could be turned OFF with the switch if you do not operate remotely........ I mentioned this very faint noise...... but it must not scrare you..... it is very faint... it is almost the same or at leat maybe the same noise people could hear when using the KIO2 itself.

So this is it !!!

Now, people can see that I'm not a genuis guy !!! :-) :-) I only connect wires..... :-)

OK now.... let's do it !!! :-)

For people interested... I found same interface I used in my project on sale on eBay...

Look items number 270230239555 or 120122490311

No cheap price... but it is a very cool add-on !!! :-)
