I need a new power supply for my K3s or my other 13V 20 amp transceivers. Is
this one a good choice? Works well? Minimal RF hash? 73, John N1JM -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
Dear John,
I found that the Powerwerx that Elecraft resells (see: Elecraft® Hands-On Ham Radio™) resells meets your requirements. It is also available from Powerwerx (see: Power Supplies | Powerwerx). I switched to it from my Astron power supply. I have detected no RF hash on my Elecraft products or on my IC 7300. 73, Joe Lynch, N6CL | | | | | | | | | | | Power Supplies | Powerwerx Learn about our popular small desktop switching power supply features. The strongest hash moves up and down 8the 80 meter band.. But my main objection is that it shuts down the KX3 at turn-on. I use it with the PowerWerx PG40S and a 12 volt battery. Whenever I forget to turn on the SS30 first, I have to repower the KX3 and then use the menu to switch the power amp back on.
The KX3 display briefly displays an overvoltage message. My SS30DV has worked flawlessly for about 6 years on a variety of rigs and other
uses. Contrary to the lack of such info, the actual voltage IS ADJUSTABLE with a small potentiometer inside the unit. However, there is a flaw in the unit. I use it at a condo on a beach of the Atlantic Ocean in Cocoa Beach, Florida in the winters. The area around the rear entrance for the air intake for the fan is totally rusted and the paint around the vent is completely gone. There is, obviously, salt in the air, even though I used it only inside, on the floor near the sliding glass door to the balcony. While it is still working OK, I suspect that there is also corrosion inside the unit, but hope that it doesn't cause a failure. A better antirust coating and/or better paint job should be used. My K3 shows no corrosion nor rusting of any parts, including inside. I did opt for the Stainless Steel Case screws in construction. I have the Astron SS30M which I find to be electrically quiet, excellent
regulation. The fan does cycle on and off from time to time and that is noticeable. I power 3 radios, not at the same time, from this supply. Originally it has the Pos and Neg connections where you insert the wire and tighten the screw on the side. I too 2 brass, 10-32 screws, 1 1/2" long, cut off the heads, filed a small flat spot on the side at one end, inserted one of these in the connectors and tighten the screws. Now I have two studs to which I can place several ring terminals and secure with a wing nut. From these I have the power for 3 radios, SWR/Pwr meter, antenna tuner all attached. I did add a dedicated ground terminal to the rear of the supply. This is the common point for all of the station equipment ground bonding. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/1/2018 11:56 PM, John_N1JM wrote: > I need a new power supply for my K3s or my other 13V 20 amp transceivers. I had a similar bad weather situation with my VHF operating in VHF
contests. The 144 MHz position was next to the door that went outside, and the shack was alone on a rocky hilltop. It was 26 miles from the ocean, so very little salt air, but the door was usually open and fog and humidity was a recurring event. I always noticed that the 144 laptop would crap out quite often. Any other computer up there would work OK, but that unit near the open door would always fail. (usually a bad keyboard or bad hard drive.) I also had rusty screws on the K3 which was also close to that open door. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions on and off the mailing list. I'm
probably going to bite for the Elecraft version. 73, John N1JM John_N1JM wrote > I need a new power supply for my K3s or my other 13V 20 amp transceivers. > Is > this one a good choice? Works well?
