I second that, I would love to see what all the traffic is about.

P3 Photo

Don Nesbitt
In reply to this post by Don Nesbitt
Received a direct reply to my earlier post regarding a photo.  Thanks to
John N6AX for forwarding the photo.  Someone will likely have a better photo
to share but this gives us an idea of what the prototype looks like.

See the photo at:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/n4hh/

The link should work by just clicking on it - no need to register, etc.
Just click and enjoy!  Once there, click on the photo of the P3 and select a
large size.

Many thanks John!  73 -- Don N4HH

Re: P3 Photo

Brett Howard
Thanks much Don...

Anyone have a phone that can take video?  I'd like to see how fast it
updates.

Re: P3 Photo

W6NEK
In reply to this post by Don Nesbitt
My first reaction to seeing the P3 was that its front panel layout is
presently designed for it to be located on the LEFT side of the K3.  I know
all the left handed people out there will say that's fine but as a rightie I
disagree.  Placing it on the left of the K3 it sits next to the front panel
Mic and Phone connectors (with associated cables).  It also sits next to the
left mounted carrying handle (scratches from existing handle mounting
screws).  For me, this "left side" location forces me to shift the radio 7
inches to the right of my seating position.  Guess I'm an old fart who
expects various rig accessories (speakers, DMU's, scopes, etc) to be located
on the right.  I'm sure someone will say that all I would have to do is move
the unit to the right side.  However, the existing proto-type layout is not
optimized for that location.  Perhaps Elecraft will entertain reversing
(flip) the existing front panel layout to allow optimized right side
location.  The only reason I can think of that may have prompted the P3's
present location is the closer proximity to the IF Out/Accessory connectors,
or all the designers at Elecraft are left handed ;-)

Nice hi-res display, 400 KHz max display span, matching K3 esthetics.  Going
to be a very popular accessory for the K3.

I'm a lefty, but like the display on the right.  Is there an adjustable sweep speed?? It is the only thing I don't like about the IC radios, fixed sweep rate.  When can I order one??????

Whoever it was that said it had the WOW factor, I AGREE, really nice, and
great bandwidth.  Just WOW.  Only thing is that it looks like it wowed
itself out of my price capability.  Any word on estimated price?  Hope not
but I ws afraid of that anyway.

Re: P3 Photo

Brett Howard
In reply to this post by W6NEK
I don't see what you're talking about here at all..  Honestly looking at
that picture I see this thing as optimized for placement on the right
side of the K3.  That gives you easier access to the select knob and the
buttons along the right side.  Hell if all else fails you can set the
thing on top of the K3.  Just because something is set on the left side
doesn't mean its ergonomically designed to set there.  It would do
equally well on top of and to the right of the K3.  Bout the only thing
its not designed for is to sit below the K3.

Re: P3 Photo

Merv Schweigert
Have heard the same,  looks to me like it fits like a glove on
the left side,  since my K3 sits where a larger radio did, the
open space left is a perfect fit.  Left side for me it is.

Re: P3 Photo

Tom-5
In reply to this post by Don Nesbitt
My only advice before it goes to production:

Make the cabinet 1" wider, and stack some band buttons there.
Maybe 2" wider with a bunch of programmable buttons that we can forget what they are programmed for.
Loop the rs-232 signal through this box to send the band change commands.

And then it will be the P3AAA !

Re: P3 Photo

Guy, K2AV
In reply to this post by Don Nesbitt
Oh Yeah!

And in the what-to-do-with-the-2/3-empty-space list...

How about a KIT, high end *PREMIUM* (not cheep for maximum profit as most
stuff available) switching supply that..

1) fits nicely into the P3 or into a separate "metered" elecraft box made
for it.
2) is completely noiseless at RF frequencies.
3) has a sense lead to the 13V bus *inside* the K3 and maintains a perfect
voltage to the K3, regardless of some additional loads (like my 10W K3)
4) has a separate connection(s) to a battery(s), which it uses as INPUT to
the switching supply and draws from automatically and seamlessly if the AC
drops.
5) drawing from the battery(s) will supply proper voltage to the K3
regardless of the charge state, down to a setable input cutoff threshold.
6) will have a smart charge cycle that works whenever the K3 is not drawing.
7) has a separate lead to a solar panel and will pull from the panel at
whatever level the panel is supplying to a) supply the K3 and b)
smart-charge the battery.
8) completely RF proof and can't be queered by RF in the shack.

Hmm. We may have a religious issue here. I was delighted to see the P3
positioned on the left BECAUSE I am right-handed. I send CW with my right
hand and adjust the primary radio with my left hand. Stuff located on the
right side of the panel (or to the right of the panel) must be adjusted
while obscuring most of the panel.

I suspect, however, that the P3 will come with sufficiently long cables to
be placed on either side.

Not physically possible for a switching supply; you need to specify
acceptable, non-zero levels of RF noise.

Why?  Surely the K3 is designed to be tolerant of battery voltage
variations.

This and the following seem to be more like the requirements for a
commercial use UPS (as against domestic use ones).

Again, not physically possible, for any piece of electronics; you need
to specify acceptable levels.

Re: P3 Photo

P.B. Christensen
Although the P3 product is still in development,  it looks like a very
attractive and functional matching accessory for the K3.  A few questions:

-  What is the typical MDS seen on the display?
-  Is a low-noise, unity-gain buffer w/ BPF utilized at the I.F. input?
-  Assuming it's powered from the K3 or alternate +12VDC source, what is the
measured amount of current (thinking ahead for portable operation)?
- Any photos of the tentative back panel available?

Although I probably would have opted for a stand-alone "black box" device
(and hoping that may be an alternate version one day), I can see the
marketing logic where a large number of potential purchasers are looking for
a transceiver with a built-in panadapter.  Even though the P3 is a
stand-alone unit, it appears to be well-integrated with the K3 to give it a
"built-in" look and feel.  This should put the K3 in the running for buyers
who would otherwise purchase the K3 but for the fact that it lacks a
built-in panadapter.

I don't think the question has been asked, so...

Does the P3 digitally-sample the 8 MHz I.F. immediately at its input (i.e.
akin to the SDR-IQ), or is a mixer architecture used to convert the I.F. to
baseband sampling for the spectrum and waterfall displays?

>From the photo it appears that the display is not averaging the signals as
Flex SDR. The QRN appears as little signals. With the Flex SDR- LP Pan, QRN
moves the entire base line up and down slowly but doesn't seem to appear as
a mess of little peaks, masking the actual CW signal. That's the amazing
thing about the I/Q system. I wonder if the P3 has the same capability or
does it resemble a more refined version of ICOM's scope?

Just wasn't turned on. We can average multiple samples (# settable by
user)  for s/n improvement etc.
