Elecraft and Apple

Sverre Holm (LA3ZA)
Judging from the volume on the list regarding the new KX3, Elecraft seems to have as loyal a following as Apple - only a smaller customer base. Maybe Elecraft has learnt from their neighbors?

Re: Elecraft and Apple

I think that Elecraft and Apple indeed do have something in common.

I compare Microsoft and Apple this way.  Bill Gates admits that his
goal was to build a large dominant company.  He succeeded.  Apple
seems to want to change the world through innovative and original
ideas.  They have and they now drive a lot of the consumer
electronics industry. Viz. Windows, media players, tablets ...

I won't make a comparison between Microsoft and the rest of the
amateur industry, but like Apple Elecraft has a vision that has them
create new and revolutionary radios.  We can already see their effect
on the rest of the industry.  I leave it to the reader to make their
own list.

Disclaimer:  Yes, Apple stole the Idea for the Mac from Xerox PARC.
XEROX didn't know what they had or how to market it.  Apple did.

Ohh I do hope not!

Apple don't want their end users taking the lid off or making
non-approved mods/changes and upgrades (hardware or software) and make a
lot of their money out of the user AFTER they have bought the item..

It sounds like the KX3 might be a dream HF /MM rig once the 100W amp/ATU
is factored in, especially if the 100W amp/atu can be remotely mounted

I've wondered if there were any possible relationship between the display on
the P3 and those used in some Apple products.

I've compared Elecraft to Apple for a long time. They make products they'd love to use and hope others love them too. Those who truly love great hardware want to make their own great software for it (Steve Jobs paraphrased). I think these describe both Apple and Elecraft. Elecraft doesn't open-source their software, and for the most part, neither does Apple.  Yes, Elecraft might makes kits that let you "get inside" the hardware, but they also don't support or warranty user modifications.  Like Apple, they're announcing a game-changing product at a world major event.

This time, Elecraft has, in my opinion, outdone even Apple in product development secrecy!
