I'm in Santa Cruz, and things like telephones (landlines), cell
phones, and DSL is down for a lot of people. Even 911 service (!).

Sigh. So much for redundancy on the part of the backbone providers, eh?

I guess the Supervisors in San Luis Obispo should be made aware of this due to their restricions against amateur transmitters.

Since there was no smiley there (or "hi hi"), and just to make sure
everyone knows, that was an April Fools hoax ... seems quite a few were
fooled by it...

As others have pointed out, the SLO thing was a hoax. But both the FCC
and the folks in San Luis Obispo county are taking it quite seriously.
They have issued a press release that makes it clear how important and
welcome hams are to their county.

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/04/09/10763/?nc=1

...and this one is definitely not  a hoax, even if you do read it on
the internet.
