K2 #4687 made its maiden voyage in a FD this year and came through with
flying colors in the 1A category from Columbus, Texas. We ran 100 watts to
a 3 element tribander on 60' of Rohn 25 we pulled up with a pulley and a 40'
tree. We also hung a 2 element 40M quad strung between a pipe 10' above the
tribander and another tree to the northeast of the tower. The bands were
great and the location was extremely quiet...or was it just the K2. Naw, it
was mostly the location, but the K2 squeezed about 900 CW QSOs and 700 SSB
QSOs out of the 24 hour period. There were only 2 operators, KD5GTB on SSB
and me on CW, so we were pretty tired after standing up the tower and
stringing up the 40M quad, but we lasted the entire contest and still had
energy to lower the tower without damaging anything. We had an FT-100 as a
backup, but never needed it. The Honda generator purred very nicely all
weekend too.
The highlight of the weekend was working N0SS on 2 different bands and
knowing we were working K2 to K2. Your 5W sounded mighty good in Texas Tom!
