FM transmit audio level

Edward R Cole
I continue to get complaints my mic audio is too low on FM.  So today
I ran the mic gain to 60 and they said it only slightly better, so I
advanced deviation to 6.0 which is too wide for normal deviation,
still light audio reports.  I have no problem on SSB with my Heil
HM10-5 desk mic set to gain=20 and had no problems using it with my
FT-847 on any mode.

So I wonder if there is an internal mic gain pot that can be adjusted
for FM?  One person offered that maybe the radio was selected for
Narrow Band FM, but I do not see any place in the configuration menu
that has such a selection.

Of course 15-KHz FM used to be referred to as NBFM when the standard
was 30-KHz.  But I'm guessing the current term refers to 12.5 KHz.

Anyway is there a way to adjust this?  I prefer to keep my mic gain
set to 20 so I do not inadvertently splatter all over an HF band
because I forgot to reset it.
