FM via K3

JIM DAVIS-11
Gentlemen,

Is there any way to manipulate the transmitted audio when on FM using the K3??? Nothing in the
manual
suggests that it's even remotely possible, while of course when on SSB or AM it can be
accomplished
using either TX-EQ or ESSB!

I ask this question because I work a club-rptr on 6mtrs w/FM and eventhough I'm FQ into the
machine
they mentioned to me that my FM transmitted audio sounded a tad (SHARP) lacking the fidelity of
most mobile FM rigs available today!

Regards,

Jim/nn6ee

Tx EQ is applied.

You can adjust the deviation as well.

Jim,

It certainly could be the bandpass response of the microphone element
itself.  What are you using for a microphone on the K-3?  Check that out.

Hi Jim,
Like you I find the K3 lacking on both FM and AM. The audio sounds thin.
The AM is lacking, in that with full mic gain and full compression I
only get about 85 percent modulation.

I would like to be able to control the audio as I can on SSB, which is
excellent. Any chance of having another look at these modes in the near
future, Wayne, Eric and Lyle?

I've reverted back to the IC706 mk 2 for AM and FM and use the K3 on
receive at the moment.

Hi John, Jim,
I have noticed this problem with AM for some time, and hope that a
solution would soon be coming soon.

The Tx EQ is applied in AM and FM modes, so you should be able to tailor
it pretty nicely.

Some months ago (I don't know exactly when) the components in the Tx
audio path, and Rx headphone path, were changed to improve low frequency
response.

The most recent Beta release increases AM maximum modulation.

That's great news Lyle. It looks better on my monitor scope. I will
try it live on our AM gray hair net tonight. Thanks for the great work.

So does that mean that after some specific serial number there is
better LF response in both transmit and receive than earlier radios?

Is this a change that can be worked into the mods list, or would it
require replacement of the board(s)?

I'm having a hard time finding where these changes are.  Were these changes
rolled into the current production?
